Are they going to franchise this guy every year? That's a pretty big chunk of change. Confused

They did it to Charles Woodson, so why not Asomugha?

What does that have to do with anything. He is our best player why would Al just let him walk without trying to trade him or lock him up long term. That would make no sense to just let our best player leave.

Do you even know what you're talking about? Teams often use the franchise tag on the same player multiple years in a row in order to avoid signing him to a long-term deal because they don't see him as a long-term investment. The Raiders may view Asomugha as a guy who will have diminishing returns after this season. If that's the case, they would have little to no incentive to sign him to a 5 or 6 year contract. Paying him a one year tender means they'll get the top performance for this year and they can then let him walk and decline on another team without having to pay him the lucrative free agent contract that another team would pay. It's the ugly business side of the sport.

Is it the exclusive or non exclusive tag?

Excuse my ignorance again, but whats the difference?

Exclusive, no one can touch him. He'll be a Raider or sit out.

Non Exclusive means other teams can negotiate. If they sign him, they have to give up 2 first round picks to the Raiders.

That's half of it.

The other half is in terms of compensation. A non-exclusive tag is the average of the top 5 salaries at the player's position from last year. An exclusive tag if the average of the top 5 salaries at the player's position for this year. If I am not mistaken, an exclusive tag gets recalculated right before the draft to take into account any new contracts signed.

Quote:
The franchise tag is a designation given to a player by a franchise that guarantees that player a contract the average of the five highest-paid players of that same position in the entire league, or 120% of the player's previous year's salary (whichever is greater) in return for retaining rights to that player for one year. An NFL franchise may only designate one player a year as having the franchise tag, and may designate the same player for consecutive years. This has caused some tension between some NFL franchise designees and their respective teams due to the fact that a player designated as a franchise player precludes that player from pursuing large signing bonuses that are common in unrestricted free agency, and also prevents a player from leaving the team, especially when the reasons for leaving are not necessarily financial. A team may, at their discretion, allow the franchise player to negotiate with other clubs, but if he signs with another club, the first club is entitled to two first round draft picks in compensation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Football_League#Franchise_tag

In my interpretation the exclusive offer differs only in the fact that the team refuses to allow the player to negotiate with other teams where the non-exclusive he is free to negotiate a trade as long as the other team is willing.

I heard a rumor the exclusive is the 5 top players in the league (any position) or 120% of his previous year. Scrabble will have to play this year for Oakland and walk next year. That 120% next year would sink the Raiders cap.

Is there a limit as to how many times a team can use the franchise tag on a player? I know many of us in the Jets forum were wondering this.

No however a 20% raise every year gets prohibitive fast. I started with 10m despite the cap hit for Aso is like 13m I believe but I didn't feel like taking the time to look it up.

2009 10m
2010 12m
2011 14.4
2012 17.28
2013 20.73

I guess the good news coming from this, is that he'll still be on an irrelevant team...imagine if someone like the Patriots ever signed him..=/

I really feel bad. I think if he was on a team that was a contender he would excel a lot more then he already does.
