|
|
|
I'm not saying I want the Browns to trade Sheard or Rubin, nor am I saying I think it will happen. But do you guys think it's possible that they do?
I could be wrong, but I think Kruger normally lined up across from right tackles while playing for the Ravens, and that's where Sheard normally lines up. If that's the case, then one of them needs to switch sides and I'm not sure how well that would work out. I'm not sure if Kruger is a good enough of a pass rusher to go up against left tackles. Unless the front office thinks Sheard can go up against LTs, then it would make sense for him to be traded. Especially because it's not known how good he'll be in the 3-4. I'm not saying they should trade him just for the sake of trading him, but I wouldn't be against it if they're offered a reasonable deal. If Sheard were to be traded, then they could still draft Ansah or Jordan at #6 overall. Both have the potential to be dynamic OLBs in the 3-4 and have the athletic ability to line up across from left tackles.
I'm a big fan of Ahtyba Rubin but assuming he's going to start at nose tackle, he might not see a ton of playing time. From what I've read about Horton's system, the starting nose tackle doesn't get a lot of playing time. If that's the case, then is there much of a need to have a great nose tackle? The Browns could likely trade Rubin and get a good deal in return and still have John Hughes, who seems perfectly capable of being a starting NT. Some say Rubin could line up at DE with Taylor possibly starting at NT, but that doesn't make much sense. Horton seems like to have for his DEs to be able to rush the passer, which is something Taylor is very good at. Rubin can collapse the pocket as well, but he's a bit on the short side to be a DE. Then they paid Desmond Bryant money to start while also having Winn, who at the very least should be a good backup in the 3-4. He too is very good at rushing the passer.
Like Sheard, I wouldn't trade Rubin just for the sake of trading him. If the right offer came along, though, I would hope Cleveland's front office would seriously consider trading him. Sheard would be replaced by Kruger and the Browns could draft another OLB in the first round. Rubin would be replaced by Hughes and the Browns would still have a lot of talent along the defensive line.
Say the Browns make these trades...
Cleveland receives: 2nd-round pick
Carolina receives: Ahtyba Rubin
(Other possible trade partners: Philadelphia, Oakland, NYJ, Houston, San Diego, Minnesota, Indianapolis, New England, Denver)
Cleveland receives: 2nd-round pick
New England receives: Jabaal Sheard & 6th-round pick
Sign these players:
Keenan Lewis, CB; Captain Munnderlyn, CB; Denario Alexander, WR
This would be a great offseason for the Browns. Those players would fill needs and most of them would come at a very reasonable price. The trades give them draft picks in a good part of this year's draft. And maybe they're not done with trades...
Cleveland receives: #9 overall & #72 overall
New York Jets receives: #6 overall & 7th-round pick
The Jets want to make sure that they're able to get Geno Smith, so they trade in front of Arizona and Buffalo.
1. Ezekiel Ansah - OLB, BYU: Gives the Browns a possible dynamic outside linebacker. Would look good playing across Kruger and unlike Kruger, he has the talent to be a very well-rounded outside linebacker.
2. Tyler Eifert - TE, Notre Dame: Eifert gives the Browns a very good receiving tight end who has very good hands, is a good route-runner, excellent body control and is a capable blocker. He could be great under Chudzinski. He and Jordan Cameron could make up for a dynamic duo at tight end.
2. Kevin Reddick - LB, North Carolina: Special athlete with very good speed. He has decent size with the frame to get bigger. He is very good at rushing the passer and is also very capable of playing in coverage. With proper coaching, Reddick could become an excellent player.
3. Bacarri Rambo - S, Gerogia: Rambo should be the final piece to Cleveland's secondary. He's very well-rounded who is physical, is a ball-hawk, is good vs. the run and the pass, etc. Would look good playing next to T.J. Ward.
3. Larry Warford - OG, Kentucky: Excels at both run and pass-blocking. Is very athletic with great size. Possesses good technique and has the mobility to get downfield to make blocks.
4. Zac Dysert - QB, Miami (OH): Has great size, a strong arm and can run. Reminds some of Ben Roethlisberger, and not just because they went to the same college. If Haslam sees the similarities, it would make sense that he would want Dysert. In round four, he's well worth taking a chance on.
5. Ryan Swope - WR, Texas A&M: Might not last this long but he had a somewhat disappointing season. He's been compared to Wes Welker. Some say he will be a slot receiver while others think he could be a starter if he lives up to his potential. The Browns signed Alexander, but he has trouble staying healthy. Swope is well worth taking in round five.
Depth Chart:
QB: Weeden/Dysert
RB: Richardson, Hardesty
FB: Smelly/FA/draft pick
WR: Gordon, Alexander, Little, Benjamin, Swope
TE: Eifert, Cameron
LT: Thomas

DE: Bryant, Winn, FA/draft pick
NT: Hughes, Kitchen

OLB: Ansah, Kruger, Groves, Gocong
ILB: Jackson, Reddick, JMJ, Robertson/Fort
CB: Haden, Lewis, Munnderlyn, Skrine

NOTE: Like I said, I'm not saying I want or think the Browns should trade Sheard or Rubin. I'm just bored and playing around with ideas. Thought it would be fun to think what the Browns would do in the draft if they acquired a couple of draft picks for those two. _________________ Cleveland Browns Forum Hall of Fame Inductee

NNNNOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I feel a very early 2nd for Rubin is too much, and the late 2nd minus a 6th is too little... and to the Pats no less.
Im "meh" on Munnderlyn and Alexander. I dont like Ansah that early, Im not a fond of Reddick, and I dont like Dysert at all.
I like signing Lewis. I like a potential trade down, and I do like Rambo and Warford. _________________

I feel like hes a slower version of Timmons. Someone you can send on a blitz several times a game and has athleticism to cover. _________________ Trent Richardson please!!! |

Would someone please explain to me why we would want to immediately start trying to trade away our finally accumulated and much needed depth in our front 7?
Don't say Sheard can't play standing up, he did it on a lot of plays last year, and was projected to do so coming out of college. _________________ "If you can't stand the neural activity, than stay out of the neural activator" -Professor Fink

With how Horton has been describing how he wants his defense to be big and fast,I have a faint suspicion that Alec Ogletree is someone who Horton and the Browns are really high on. _________________ Murray State University Alum: Go Racers

Business side of things? Sheard has a cap hit of $1.3M in 2013 ($1.6M in 2014) and is a starting OLB.
He is due to make about $100K more than Groves over the next two years. Basically, he's a starter making backup money.
From a business perspective, it would be completely dumb to trade players like Jabaal Sheard and Phil Taylor ($2.2M cap hit in 2013, $2.5M in 2014).
Those are the kind of players you need to have on your roster to have sustained success. That requires successful drafting year in and year out.
Trading those kinds of players halfway into their first contracts does not improve the team in any way whatsoever.
As far as player for player trades go, they rarely happen in the NFL. I'm not saying it won't happen, but it's very unlikely. |
