Since the NHL went to an alignment that sees 16 teams in the East but only 14 in the West, there should be an expansion to 32 teams in the coming years.

Both teams would be placed in the West, but where?

Well, given that Colorado is the only non-Central time team in the Central Division, and is in an area of the US that has more in common with Arizona and California than with Minnesota, Illinois, etc., I think that Colorado in the Central is only a temporary thing.

I believe that the NHL will place their next two expansion teams in the Central Time Zone so as to allow Colorado to move to the Pacific. My top two candidates for teams in this regard are Houston and Kansas City. Both cities have arenas that are ready to host an NHL team.

Saskatchewan and one of the three north east states. Probably Maine, even though it'd be too tough to convert the bruin blood up here. Nothing down south. Maybe another team in Minny or one from Alaska. Saskatchewan deff tho.

Expansion would be a terrible idea.

I'd rather see contraction than expansion in the NHL tbh.

This. TERRIBLE idea. But it's going to happen. Quebec City and Seattle will be the two with Vegas as a wildcard instead of Seattle.

Expansion would be a GREAT idea for the NHL. They can clearly support it with their talent, and it is important to grow the market.

Seattle for sure, and I vote Houston.

Houston? Texans don't care about Hockey. Couldn't even fill the arena for the greatest player in franchise history getting his jersey retired. Texas is the last place that needs another hockey team.

Expansion is a dumb idea. If they do I'd say Seattle and Quebec City are the most ideal places but I think Houston would work. Milwaukee, Kansas City and Vegas won't work

Little new to the whole hockey forum scene but due to the ridiculous persistence of a friend of mine, I've become a hockey fan over the past year (Must say, one of the best live game experiences I've ever had. Not as good as a Cardinals game but it's close). The expansion talk seems to be EVERYWHERE and the argument against it is always the same from every person I post with or talk with face to face: Dilution of the talent pool. Most people on this side of the conversation seem to think that the league is already overextended talent wise at 30 teams and the on ice product has suffered as opposed to the pre-southern expansion era. The argument against that from the other side is always the same: That's not true. The other side quickly brings up the fact that the hockey talent is greater now than it apparently has been in some time and that if you look through the cap numbers and how and where teams are allocating their funds, the bigger problem talent/product wise is the salary cap.

I said earlier that I'm new to the game and I am but for a number of reasons, I'm all too familiar with cap allocation and same as it is in every other professional sport, it's hard to fill out team depth when around 85% of your cap is designated to your top 6-8 players (Which, according to the sites I'm seeing, is the case for a bunch of NHL teams). I don't know why that is, hoping to learn but its clear as day to me, a new guy, that cap allocation in such a top heavy way will hurt teams when injuries come into play, it's a no brainer. If I'm right in all this, I guess I'd have to say that I don't fully agree with talent dilution being a reason against expanding to 32. Lots of people at HFBoards seem to think 34's possible and that might be a stretch but I think 32 could be doable, if it's done right which brings me to the actual answer for this question. 31 and 32 should go to Seattle and Quebec City. While there are obvious reasons against both (No stadium in Seattle and apparently still a lot of back and forth and whether it will happen, the political scene in QC), they both the candidates for ownership that expansion teams need. Deep pockets and the will to grow the market. If I had to pick two spots, those would be the easy choices.

Las Vegas is an intriguing spot though I gotta admit....
