Figured I'd throw this up to see some people's first impressions of players or this team.

From the little I saw....

OL was awesome, and not close to a finished product yet, Fluker, Franklin and Barksdale made some basic mistakes. Watt is going to be an elite C. Dunlap gon Dunlap.

Gordon needs a lot more work. He looked like the coaches scared him away from bouncing anything outside or cutting anything back. He's never had great vision but he was hesitant, hopefully its just rookie nerves.

DL looked solid. Philon played well.

OLB depth looks a lot better than I expected. Emmanuel could be really good as a backup Leo.

Secondary was weird. Robinson and Verrett played well. Williams played bad, Mager was either really off or really on. Addae did his thing, playing all reckless. Weddle is Weddle.

Thats pretty much what I got. I didn't really get a chance to watch the 2nd half, and was only paying half attention, so these takes are partially from gifs other guys pointed out.

Gordon's hesitation was a bit of a concern. But with Woodhead and BO, we don't need him to be an every down/feature RB right away.

And I thought Donald Butler looked pretty good. In fact the entire first string defense looked fast out there and were flying around, hopefully that continues.

OL looked really good

I don't think Gordon was hesitant, I just don't think he was ready for the speed of the NFL. He ran hard, and picked a hole, just wasn't at the hole when it opened.

Addae learned how to tackle. He seemed to be in on every play.

Butler looked like he cared again.

I still believe that if Oliver had 4.5 speed, he'd be one of the top RB's. He looked great.

The DL looked bad. They were getting pushed around.

Penetration was still not there.

Emanuel stood out to me as a guy who should get some playing time and with Williams' injury he may have got his chance.

Danny Woodhead already shows how valuable he is. BO looked solid, loved his TD run breaking ankles. Didn't see much of Gordon since NFLN was showing the 4th qtr of another game instead of the Chargers first team offensive drive....

Anther guy that stood out was Robinson. I think he'll end up being one of our best FA pickups. For the first time in as long as I can remember I am actually excited to see how our secondary performs... as long as Steve Williams either remembers how to play or stays on the bench lol

Also, can we put Josh Lambo's leg onto Novak?! Dude killed that ball on the kickoff. I like Novak, he is pretty reliable but doesn't have a super strong leg. Having someone who can basically always kick it through the endzone would save a ton of wear and tear on our guys.

I went back and watched it focusing mostly on the guys up front (OL and DL/LBs). I gotta say I really liked what I saw.

From what I saw on the OL, I liked a lot of it. Franklin and Barksdale did exactly what I expected, some mental errors, but also some plays that really showed off what they could do. Namely Franklin taking a lot of bad angles blocking the 2nd level and Barksdale worrying about who to block and not just going and hitting someone (got lost in space more than a few times).

Chris Watt is going to be scary good this year, confirmed what I thought I originally saw. To quote Telesco on the day he picked him "He just gets the job done". He's always in the right position and always got his man.

Really liked what I saw from Sirles and Craig Watts, who surprised me playing at RT. Sirles is just solid all around, a true grinder, keeps fighting to win the leverage battles and drive guys off the ball. He caused his share of scraps as the whistle blew. Watts was nothing flashy, but technique was really sound, anchored well, and was able to guys on outside zones and speed rushes. Chris Hairston looked pretty solid against Randy Gregory.

Also wanted to add that John Phillips is an awesome blocker, he needs to stay on the team for that reason alone. His block really sealed the Oliver TD run.

On Defense...

OLB's looked good, but still didn't get as much pressure as I would've wanted at least consistency wise. I've been critical of Tourek in the past, but he looked damn near unblockable in almost every pass rush snap. Emmanuel was either really good or bad, but DAMN does the guy have a motor.

DL once again for the most part was solid, but not spectacular. Kind of held ground, but LB's failed to fill quickly, leading to lots of 5-10 yard runs that should've been 0-3 yard runs. Depth looks much improved with Carruthers/Unrein/Philon.

Philon has a lot of potential, but like we all knew, isn't quite there yet.

I want Chi Chi Ariguzo to make this team. He was literally the only LB other than Kavell Conner who diagnosed and filled holes immediately, made a lot of problem on run plays. Otherwise ILB's didn't look great.

Haven't watched either of these preseason games with much of a close eye, but I gotta say that it seems like Nolan is doing a great job with both the off-ball and pass-rushing LBs.

BO has looked fantastic, too. Such an explosive runner if he gets a little room to operate.

I think he does have a chance. There's talk that Novak has been working on his kickoffs though. If that's true then I think Novak has the job, but I'm liking what I see from Lambo.

He has a shot, but the Chargers are notorious for favoring the vets even when they are getting outplayed.

Tonight his kickoffs have looked worse than ever, especially compared to Lambo blasting it into the endzone with ease. I really hope they can find a way to keep both on the roster. Novak has made 86.3% of his FGs in four years with the Chargers. That accuracy would put him 4th best among the active kickers in the league... not an easy feat to replace.

But this has a ton to do with the fact that we don't trot him out there on anything over 53 yards or so.

Also, our defensive average starting field position after kickoffs was 26th-best last year (per PFF). The combination of having a kicker with the worst touchback percentage and a mediocre STs coverage unit in general obviously really hurts us here. Unless we're gonna commit more resources to STs coverage going forward to mitigate the fact that returners never kneel in the endzone against Novak, I think we need to go in another direction.

Do you guys think Jacoby is a lock for the 53?

With Chris Davis having gone on IR, I think so. Had Davis stayed healthy and had a productive showing as a returner, I think Jacoby might have been deemed expendable. Now... not so much.
