The Packers gave tight end Colt Lyerla a tryout at their rookie minicamp over the weekend. Now, they are apparently set to give him a longer audition. The club said Monday it had signed Lyerla, the ex-Oregon star whose collegiate career was marked by a number of off-field incidents.

Lyerla joins six other tight ends on the Packersí roster, including third-round pick Richard Rodgers and veterans Andrew Quarless and Brandon Bostick. The Packersí top player at the position in recent years, Jermichael Finley, remains an unrestricted free agent.

didn't Lyerla make comments how the Sandy Hook elementary school shootings were staged or something?

Colt Lyerla=BEAST!!!! Packer Fans are ecstatic to get this kid. A physical specimen. Had 1st to 2nd rd grade didn't get drafted because off the field issues. We got a steal if this kid keeps his nose clean. No pun intended. Plays with a nasty physical style very hard to bring down. Gives Rodgers a legit weapon and insurance policy incase Finley doesn't get cleared medically. Vintage Ted Thompson move Cool

What other players with troubled pasts have the Packers picked up which would suggest that this was a "vintage" TT move?

To be fair, Johnny Jolly's problems didn't occur until after he joined the Packers. He had no known character issues prior to being drafted. Koren, yes...but that wasn't exactly taking a giant risk and Ted Thompson was with the Seahawks when he was drafted, so he already knew him. I don't see TT as being some giant risk-taker when it comes to reclamation projects. Lyerla is the first one that he really doesn't even have any prior relationship with.

Hopefully AC Leonard pans out and he can be a vintage Spielman move! Wink

Maybe I should've been a little more clear when I said vintage TT. I was really referring to his ability to find gems in UDFAs like Tramon Williams, Sammy Shields, Boykins and others to lesser degree. I'll admit Thompson isn't much of a risk taker with guys with character flaws. You're right about Robinson and Jolly Ted is very loyal to guys he drafts. But his pattern is to take chances on low risk high reward players. Jolly did have character issues in college. That and a foot injury made him slide to the 6th round, he was projected late 2nd to mid 3rd. Robinson, Jolly were low risk high reward. The Packers paid them pennies and got good production. If the guy screws up again he's out the door with only 50 grand in his pocket. Very low investment for a player with great potential.

The Packers havenít closed the door on another season with tight end Jermichael Finley. According to Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Packers doctors will subject Finley to medical testing on Wednesday. Finley continues to recover from neck surgery conducted following a spinal cord contusion that he suffered last season.

Aaron Rodgers told ESPNís Bob Holtzman that he has lost 11 pounds this offseason. That would put Rodgers under 220 pounds, likely the lightest weight of his NFL playing career. He said he planned to work to increase his flexibility this offseason. Part of that was an increase in the amount of yoga exercises he does.

Rodgers: "A lot of flexibility's helping with those injuries as you get older. There were some things I shied away from [while recovering from a broken collarbone] -- some heavy lifting, especially shoulder stuff in the offseason -- but I did my rehab and took it slow and feel good."
