Buddy Ryan's story is a great one. A great defensive coach who seemingly couldn't get out of the way of his own ego.

I wonder what difference it would've made, if any, if Buddy had fully developed his signature 46 defense while he was DC for the Vikings??

who wore #46 for us at that time? because that's what the 46 D was named for, the Chicago safety who had that jersey number.

true dat.

Buddy Ryan: “A quarterback has never completed a pass when he was flat on his back. We must hit the QB hard and often. QBs are overpaid, overrated, pompous bastards and must be punished. Great pass coverage is a direct result of a great pass rush, and a great pass rush is simply a relentless desire to get to the QB. Never miss an opportunity to punish the opponent. We must dominate and intimidate the enemy. If the opponent is worried about you, he is not thinking about carrying out his offensive assignment. If you play aggressive, physical, and smart – you cannot be beaten.”

Great words of wisdom, Buddy. But it's not supposed to relate to your own team's quarterback....during practice.

Ditka: “We accomplished so much together and we were never as good separately as we were together. I knew he wasn’t doing real well. But you know, he was always a tough guy, right to the end.”

Buddy Ryan's "Polish Goalline" defense -- using 14 or 15 men on the field

He used the same idea for a punt, against the Vikings:

Quote:
Having just watched his Vikings lose, 10-9, Lynn was rankled by the sight of what the Eagles called their “Polish punt team.” In a most unusual formation, designed to prevent a blocked kick or a long runback, Ryan sent 14 men onto the field for a crucial last-minute punt. At the worst, the expected penalty for too many men on the field would set the Eagles back 5 yards but drain precious seconds from the clock.

To the surprise of the Eagles, no flag was forthcoming and the safest punt in NFL history was executed without mishap. Was Ryan sheepish about employing such a questionable tactic? Hardly. When Al Meltzer asked during the taping of Ryan’s weekly television show about the propriety of having 14 men on the field, the coach did note a flaw in the strategy. “There should have been 15,” he snapped.

For all we could have known, it might have been known as the 23 defense, considering Jeff Wright played safety with Krause in the 2 years Buddy was with Bud.

Otherwise, maybe the 50 defense for Jeff Siemon?

Either way Buddy wasn't the DC, so he wouldn't have been able to develop his defense with the Vikings...he was only there to coach the D-Line. He got the Bears' DC job after his 2nd year with the Vikings.

Peanut was an excellent DB! He is able to retire with pride for what he accomplished on and off the field.

Leonard Floyd carted off Bears practice, team will update later today. Remember last years #1 Kevin White didn't play a single snap in 2015

Tough break for Chicago if it's serious.

I still don't understand how you can miss as much time as White did with shin splints.

From more recent tweets it sounds like Floyd was just sick.
