I think Russell needs to refocus. Sure, he wants to go to the NFL, but shouldn't he shorten his target first and try to make either a CFL or Arena League team?

might be logical from a fan's standpoint, but not one from investing for his future payday.

because if he bombs in the CFL or Arena League, then his NFL hopes are certainly dead.

He had quite the payday in the past. Unless he was an idiot with his funds, he should be set anyway. Now if he is not in it for the money, which is probably the case, I can see where he would want to try to get back in the NFL; try to prove all the nay-sayers wrong, but at this point, I think his chances at another big payday are slim to none.

He is, and may forever will be the greatest bust of all time. A stigma he probably doesn't want to have attached to his name forever, but it might be too late.

You can't blame the guy for trying... with 32 teams someone might take a chance on him, who knows

well, Oakland isn't going to, so 31.

and think about this... Matt Flynn was his backup at LSU and was drafted in the 7th round, while Russell went #1 overall. now Flynn is the QB at Oakland where Russell was drafted and then cut.

Life is full of subtle ironies, is it not?

Any team that signs Jamarcus Russell will bring a circus along with them as well.

Surely the media will dramatize the signing of a backup QB. He just has the name, and the media loves Quarterbacks.

Even if he's improved, I'm going to say no. Too much of a distraction for this team.

The '32 NFL teams' possibility, which was quickly reduced to 31 teams by someone above could also be reduced to a handful, considering starters who are very good, and durable, as follows:

P-Mann, E-Mann, Brady, Rodgers, Ryan, Brees, ....

So, it seems there may only be a few teams that would consider Russell as a backup. It's not going to cost those few teams much to give him a tryout. But IIRC, his biggest issue (no pun intended) was his ability to perform consistently; i.e. attitude, rather than his physical conditioning. How do you measure 'consistency' with a physical workout lasting an hour or two?

The few teams that take a look at him will probably make their decision based on an interview rather than the workout.

Not as much as if someone were to sign Jeff George. Laughing

In the 90-plus years of the NFL’s existence, very few women without family connections to ownership have held meaningful positions in football operations. Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post explains that Dawn Aponte could become the league’s first female General Manager.

Currently Miami’s V.P. of football administration, Aponte has significant influence over the team’s contractual negotiations. And she works more closely with G.M. Jeff Ireland than most realize.

Well, if he doesn't play at all anywhere, I'd suggest that his NFL hopes are pretty much dead anyway.

Because, at a certain point, he is so far out of football shape (whether he was ever in it in the first place is another topic altogether) or practice that he would take significantly longer to get up to speed.

Pat Summerall died today, at the age of 82.

he was a kicker in the NFL (for the NYG i think) way back in the 50's, but was better known for being an announcer for CBS television. he worked for four decades as a game day commentator, called 16 Super Bowls, and was teamed with John Madden.

Rolando McClain’s career with the Raiders fell apart in large part because of his inability to stay out of trouble off the field. Now his time with the Ravens is off to a bad start.

McClain, the linebacker who signed with the Ravens this month after being cut by the Raiders, was arrested on Sunday night in his hometown of Decatur, Alabama. McClain was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after an incident at a local park. Witnesses said they saw McClain cursing at police officers before he was handcuffed and taken away.

that didn't take long.

And just like that, at 24 with loads of talent his career is over. You hate to see people waste opportunities but you can't help those unwilling to help themselves.

McLain is a, well, not sure what the word is. But man, I am always shocked when guys can't go a year or two as a normal person to make some money.

Not sure why no one has signed Dansby yet. He's not great anymore, but I'd bet he can start at LBer for abot 1/3 of the teams....
