NFL Draft Scout wrote:
01/10/08 - Clemson junior defensive end Phillip Merling has decided to enter the National Football League draft. The native of St. Matthews, SC led Clemson in tackles for loss with 17 and quarterback sacks with seven in 2007, helping the Tigers to a top 10 national ranking in scoring defense and total defense. Merling had 78 tackles this season to rank fourth on the team, first among defensive linemen. He was named ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week three times, more than any other ACC player. It marked the first time since 2001 that a Clemson player was named ACC Player of the Week three times. "We wish Phillip the best in his pursuit of a National Football League career," said Clemson Head Coach Tommy Bowden. "He has the ability to be successful in his professional career. I advised him to remain for his senior year, but he felt this was the best decision for his future. I will help him any way I can as he prepares for the draft." Merling joins Clemson running back James Davis as Clemson juniors who will enter the NFL draft. It marks the fourth time in history that two Clemson juniors have turned professional in the same year. The other seasons were 1990, 1998, and 2003. - Clemson Football

Too bad he would'be been a top 10 lock next year, now hes a late 1st early second rounder.

An easy early 2nd round prospect and a team that needs a LDE (strong side) will be very lucky. Oakland will be interested, St>louis will too, a 6'6 280lbs. LDE won't fall far.

Oakland doesnt need a LDE cus we have Burgess there, but we could grab him at RDE. I would like him with our 2nd round pick.

I'm a big fan of Merling. I think he might run well enough to even be a really big OLB in the 3-4. If I remember correctly, he dropped back into coverage fairly often at Clemson when he played the "bandit" position.

a lttle slow to be an olb in the 3-4. my source has him around 4.85 at 6 3 270. looks like a 4-3 end and hes not especially explosive. based on the game i watched vs auburn.

It's funny because that's about what I would guess. If he got into the 4.65 range it would really help his stock. That probably is a step too slow for OLB in the 3-4, but it would be absolutely fantastic for a 4-3 DE.

He really reminds me of Jared Allen from the Chiefs. Almost identical styles and measurables....

I saw the same thing. I really like him to be the strong side DE. He has power and some pass rush skills but I really like his size and overall athletic ability and he could really suprise some. But he also is one of those guys who might fall if he runs poorly and has a bad workout. He's definitly all about the off-season.

Could he convert to an OLB in the 3-4?

Very Happy

This is stacking up to be a nice draft for both, offensive and defensive, lines.
