WEST COAST OFFENSE(WCO)

Bill Walsh The Architect

Bill Walsh served under Paul Brown from 1968-75 as offensive assistant , he there in Cincinnati started to place the pieces together of a more modern version and more efficient version of Sid Gillmans offense with the Chargers of the 60's.

In 1979 Walsh was appointed head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Walsh unveiled his new fully developed West Coast Offense. His offense prooved to be to much for any opposing team. Walsh led the 49ers to three Super Bowl championships in 1981, 1984 and 1988. He is widely known as the greatest mind in offensive football and one of the greatest teachers of the game , from Bill Walsh has came a whole tree of coaches, he was the true teacher of the game in all its meaning. Bill Walsh's West Coast Offense(WCO)

The West Coast Offense is not necessarily one formation or set of plays, its more a approach and theory to the game.

Walsh believed the key to opening up the field against the modern defense of todayís game was to pass on all downs to avoid tendencies and keep the defense confused. A defense must first be stretched with a short, horizontal passing attacks using a offense that is made up of anywhere from 80% passing. the West Coast passing attack utilizes all five skill positions as pass receivers in a variety of ways when attacking the defense. By using all skill positions as receivers, the offense can attack the whole field and reduce defensive coverage into one-on-one situations and in turn eventually opening up big running lanes for the running back do to the defense being spread out and focused on the pass. Walsh would try and grab the lead going into the second half he believe Running the ball later in the game ave the advantage of running against a worn down and tired defenders with low moral. Walsh could average players with hard work ethic and who were coach able, look like really good players. the West Coast offense doesnt require the of blazing need speed, WCO needs precision and accuracy as well as timing and and ability to follow derections no matter what.

Quarterback of the WCO

Quarterback is stressed most in the WCO. Quarterbacks do best in this offense if there taller and at least taller then there center do to the emphasis on vision of multiple passing lanes. Quarterbacks in the WCO need to have a quicker release then most other quarterbacks in the and most importantly are stressed to be extremely accurate because of the precise timed routes and the fear of route jumping by the defense on so many shorter routes. Quarterbacks in this offense use three and five step drops but more then normally take seven step drops steps which defies normal football thinking on short routes. Quarterbacks must also be able to throw a wide range of passes, from sideline to sideline to deep flags deep fly routes and must be able to have precise touch with running back and tight end swing routes in the flat and screen plays. Walsh also introduced the hot route, do to the blitzing a pass heavy team might get, the quarterback might have to rush a ball out of his hands as quick as possible the route. a hot route is a audible on a Wide receivers route that is called by the quarterback at the line of scrimmage if the quarterback reads blitz and feels he will need to release the balls faster then the original route called.

WCO Play Scripting
The West Coast Offense is also based of the practice of play scripting. Play scripting is the strategy of pre determining and scripting the first 10-25 plays of game and perfect those plays the week leading up to the game. Scripting plays was a Wash brain child, it avoided all tendencies Walsh would stick to the script no matter the situation even if the play had no relation or true advantage to the down and that downs situations , keeping the defense completely off guard. Walsh and his coaching staff would try numerous new plays in there scripted serious, they then would evaluate the game tape and pick apart the defenses reaction to the scripted plays. Scripting plays also ensured no Mistakes and built momentum going into the game to do the amount of repetitionís and practice that would go into every scripted play.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphias Time Line of acquiring the WCO

1972 LaVell Edwards takes over at Brigham Young University(BYU) and with Lavel Edwards comes his pass heavy offense sometimes throwing as much as 90% of the time

1979-81 Andy Reid plays tackle and guard for BYU under coach Edwards and takes a keen interest in offensive scheming , Edwards was quoted on ESPN saying "Andy had a hunger for knowledge of the game like no one I had ever met"

1982: Andy Reid graduates BYU and joins the coaching staff, and befriend newly acquired quarterbacks coach Mike Holmgren

1986: Holmgren becomes quarterback coach under Bill Walsh.

1989: Holmgren takes over as offensive coordinator running Bill Walsh's West Coast offense.

1992: Green Bay a points Mike Holmgren as head coach, Mike Holmgren hires old friend Andy Reid as assistant coach.

1995: Marty Mornhinweg(current offensive coordinator) is hired a assistant in GreenBay.

1997: Andy Reid takes over Green Bays quarterback coach .

1999: Andy Reid is hired as the Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach, Andy drafts Mcnabb and begans building the Eagles Offense around the the West Coast Offense

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WCO Summary

The West Coast Offense is proven to of had more success in the NFL then any other offense. Walsh master minded and perfected the art of the passing attack and every coach sense then has added there little tweaks and takes on the West Coast Offense, remember its more a theory and approach to the game then a actual offense. Sense Andy Reid has taken over as head coach, he has made the Eagles a powerful offensive threat behind Mcnabb boasting a team winning percentage of 620. Andy has sense handed the play calling over to Marty Mornhinweg who has opened up the running game but its clear We are a pass first run later team and for good reason the West Coast Offense wins in this league!

Excellent post Bednarik60! Would you mind if I linked to this in the forum directory's historical threads section?

The Bill Walsh coaching tree is amazing, and perhaps the greatest "diamond in the rough" find of the common era has to be Andy Reid. I don't know how many of you are old enough to remember the time during Andy Reid's hiring, but it was a huge gamble at the time. Of all the coaching candidates out there, Jeff Lurie hired someone who had never even been a coordinator in the NFL. Here was this no-name quarterbacks coach from Green Bay who would take over a franchise in shambles, and frankly, not many people believed that he could handle the job.

Go ahead please you use it Steegles46 good point by the way about the Andy Reid signing as head coach , Philly was pissed, they felt there were at least 5 better qualified coaches out there. here is the colleges Andy Reid Coached at

BYU
San Francisco State University
Northern Arizona University
University of Texas at El Paso
University of Missouri

He didnít coach a QB tell 97'

Just O Line Coaching at those small schools

Then you take into consideration the amount of power and hands control Reid demanded from the front office before signing, haha the city of Philly was kinda like whoís this Yoke Dokle from Utah ,

anything at that point was better then the horrid Rhodes days (donít get me started)[/b]

The Walsh coaching tree is an amazing thing. Technically, however, Walsh's system is not propoerly the West Coast offense. It got that name after a reporter later messed up a Bernie Kosar quote from an interview with SI's "Dr. Z". The true "West Coast" offense is the offense used by coaches such as Norv Turner and Mike Martz. However, the name stuck to Walsh's system, and is commonly used to misname any offense that uses short timing patterns extensively today.

The real West Coast offense
