Well, they need production on the D-Line. Walker has had 1/2 a sack in the past 2 years, Smith is not thaat good, and Payne is oft-injured.
Good pick in my mind. _________________

Last year Brandon Bolden...this year Zach Sudfeld! |

Johnson will probably play NT on passing downs and should help with the pass rush. That said, I'd have taken Derrick Johnson in a heart beat over Travis Johnson, and I probably would have taken Marcus Spears before TJ too. TJ will contribute, but he is a one gap penetrator. He can't occupy multiple blockers so he won't be a full time NT. He doesn't anchor against the run very well, so he's not a great DE.

You have to remember that Dom Capers was talking to Kevin Steele, the linebackers coach at FSU. Steele was also linbackers coach with the Carolina Panthers under Dom Capers tenure there. My guess is that Coach Steele would shoot Dom Capers straight on what type of players both Johnson and Barron are. Not just lip service that most coaches would give for their players going into the draft.
It is not a glamorous pick, but I do believe that they are trying to get players to fit this teams system, not just best available. Unfortunately this is something we will have to just wait and see. |
