Contest rules:
For every round list 5 players that you think the Chargers are targeting. This covers trade backs and multiple pick rounds. Here is an example:
Round 1:
Russell Okung
Anthony Davis
CJ Spiller
Golden Tate
Kyle Wilson
Round 2:
Brandon LaFell
Everson Griffen
Brian Price
Rodger Saffold
Brandon Ghee
Round 3:
5 players
Round 4:
5 players
Round 5:
5 players
etc...
and then bold the one in each round you feel will be taken. This will be sort of your final mock.
You get 10 points (maximum) if the bolded player is selected in the correct round by us.
You get 5 points (maximum)if any of the 5 players is selected in the correct round by us.
You get 3 points if the bolded player is selected by us in a different round.
You get 2 points for every player on the list that is drafted by us in a different round.
So say you have Montario Hardesty as one of the players in the 4th.
If he is bolded and taken in the 4th, you get 10 points for the pick. If he is taken in the 6th, you get 3 points.
If he is not bolded, you get 5 points for taking him in the 4th, and 2 points if he is taken in the 2nd .
Hopefully it all makes sense. These are due before the draft starts. So no later than 4:30 PST on Thursday. You can edit your 'cluster' anytime between now and then.
Here are my first 3 round. I will post my other 4 rounds later:
Round 1:
Dan Williams
Ryan Mathews
Jahvid Best
Jared Odrick
Terrence Cody
Round 2:
Tyson Alualu
Linval Joseph
Chad Jones
Nate Allen
Toby Gerhart
Round 3:
Ben Tate
Al Woods
Montario Hardesty
Morgan Burnett

I'd just like to say I've fallen in love with SIZE this draft.
If we could get Mays, Cody, Joesph on D. Couldn't imagine what a team would do with 1500 lbs of Merriman/English, Martin, Cody, Joesph, Phillips bearing down on them every snap.
Perfect scenario for me is
1. Taylor Mays
2. Terrance Cody
3. Linval Joesph
4. Ben Tate
5. Kevin Basped
6. Joique Bell
7. Joe Webb _________________

LOL at Dwyer, McCourty, Wilson and Veldheer, and Nate Allen being there in the sixth. I hope that was a joke _________________

I can see what he did. We dont have a pick in the sixth (so that pick is supposed to be the comp pick not the 6th) so he thought he would go ahead and add guys who we would look at picking in the 1st or 2nd.
For the record, i think its supposed to be a cluster for EACH PICK not each ROUND if i'm not mistaken, but correct me if i'm wrong.
EDIT: Nevermind. He did what was asked of him, i did it wrong. But he did what i said in the 1st paragraph.
Actually its a really smart thing to do, since we dont have a 6th round pick, and i dont plan on having one.
I'm gonna edit my mock so that its actually within the guidelines, and i'm gonna do the same thing. _________________

It is supposed to be each round, so it covers trades and mutiple round picks. In this years case, if there are no trade I will likely add the 6th round cluster into the 5th round since we have 2 picks in that round. It's just a fun little competition, I'm not too strict on anything.
In my opinion, the Chargers 3 biggest needs are running back, nose tackle, and safety. I expect at least one of these positions to be filled by the first 40 picks, hopefully 2 (but I had DE and OT as the 2 biggest needs last year, and yet our top 2 picks went to a guard and a linebacker). Defensive End and offensive tackle are posistions where I could see the team take a player if the value is right. Here are the top guys in my opinion at each of the positions that have a chance of being there atpick 28/40.
Nose Tackle:
1. Dan Williams
+ played his best in a pro defense under Monte Kiffen last year
+ excellent weight/quickness/strength
+ A lot of upside
- Inconsistent until his senior year
- Has had weight issues
2. Terrence Cody
+ Unmovable force in the middle
+ Disruptive in run and pass game
+ Typical nose body
- May eat his way out of league in a year
- Motivation is questionable
- lacks burst off line
Running back
1. Jahvid Best
+ Explosive, fast, quick change of direction
+ Runs harder than weight
+ Great pass catcher
- Poor blocking fundementals
- Can he carry 20 times a game?
- Not ideal size, can he add bulk without losing explosiveness?
2. Ryan Matthews
+ Ideal size
+ Runs with power and speed, very balanced
+ Great on 3rd down, can catch and block very well
- Durability
- Lacks top end speed
- Only 1 year of elite production
3. Toby Gerhart
+ Gets the hard yards with his tough running style
+ Very productive, smart, high intagibles
+ Capable pass catcher and blocker
- Good, but not top end, speed
- Too similar to Hester/Tolbert?
4. Montario Hardesty
+ Good athleticism and burst
+ good hands out of backfield
+ Excellent vision
- Scary injury history
- Again, not going to beat anyone with his speed
- Limited playing time, but that may be a plus
Safety
1. Taylor Mays
+ Everything you want physically
+ Versatile, reminds me of Weddle in that aspect
+ Great intangibles
- Misses too many tackles
- Liability in man to man, much better zone
- Too similar to what Chargers have?
2. Nate Allen
+ Very solid tackler
+ Playmaker
+ Great physical tools
- Needs to bulk up
- Liability in man to man coverage
3. Chad Jones
+ Great athlete with burst
+ Capable in man to man coverage
+ Good run support
- Extremely raw
- Antonio Cromartie syndrom? (Meaning he doesn't like to tackle)
Defesnive End
1. Jared Odrick
+ Ideal frame
+ Good burst off the line, capable of making plays in backfield
+ High effort, high motor. Doesnt take plays off
- Struggles with double teams
- Too ordinary for a top pick?
2. Tyson Alualu
+ Power, speed, and size
+ Intelligent player who is a team leader
+ High motor
- Offers little as a pass rusher
- Could bulk up some more. Wish he was 2 inches taller
- Again, not much drop off after. Worth investing a high pick?
3. Linval Joseph
+ Incredible upside
+ Top notch size and strength
+ Compares to Vaughn Martin. Could play nose down the road.
- Conditioning and weight concerns
- Raw
- Low level of competition
4. Corey Wooten
5. Alex Carrington |

Yeah, I didn't plan on us getting a 6th rounder either. My initial thoughts regarding the 6th round thing was that I have a hunch that we'll move a player and/or picks to get another pick in the 2nd or 3rd round, so I figured that another shot at partial credit was a good idea. And, if Sproles is the player that gets moved like I suspect, I wouldn't be surprised to see us grab two RBs early.
But, we'll have to see. I think I screwed it up last year by choosing who I wanted, and not thinking about who A.J. might be targeting. That's why I'll probably wind up flip-flopping again on Weatherspoon before the draft. It's hard to me to decide whether A.J. will look at him as a Merriman-type vocal leader or another loud-mouthed Phillips. |
