I'm pretty sure Monty has never run the 3-4, so how would he know?

Every draft analyst and scouting report I've read, as well as the games I've seen, tell me that DJ would not make a good OLB in our system. If one old DC, whose team has a pick a couple down from us, talks about how we should take a certain player, it's not going to change the scouting reports. Do you really think Phil Savage will say to himself, "Well I'm not sure if DJ will fit here, but if ol' Monty says he can, then it must be true!" Nothing Savage has done or said to this point leads me to believe he is so naive.

We are going to take the best player, it doesn't matter what side of the ball he plays on. I would prefer a defensive stud, but I don't know if any are worthy of the 3rd pick. If we were staying with the 4-3, DJ would be my choice in a heartbeat. It's just that the physical demands of a 3-4 OLB are much greater than DJ can handle. The reason so many college DEs play OLB in the 3-4 is because they have to take on blocks on every play, like an end in the 4-3. I implore you to watch any Texas game (against decent competition) and see what happens when someone gets a body on him. Then tell me you want to see that for 39 of 40 plays, just to see him strip the ball once. I for one, want defenders that go through blocks, not around them. It's called physicality. It is how a defense imposes it's will on an offense. That is the kind of players I want, not speedy guys that run around blocks trying to chop at the ball instead of wrapping up. That stuff works in college, but not in Cleveland.

Man, DJ is such a hot/cold prospect, I have never seen so much ambivalence about a "sure thing".

Well, he is compared to Derrick Brooks who is just like DJ and Brooks played in the 3-4... Monty is a D-Coord and does know the difficulties in running a 3-4 and says that it is just as hard to learn as the 4-3... Point is, Kiffin has made great defenses many times in the past and I'm pretty sure he knows how to convert these players... I'm sure Romeo can teach DJ when we take him.... Plus, with my experience, it's not that hard running the 3-4, it's actually a little bit easier, you just have to get the hang of it...
