Guys, let's talk about needs. We are pretty weak at ILB. We have Guyton, and Mayo. That's it.

We also need help at CB, S, WR, OLB, OT, and possibly tight end.

My Top 5 3-4 ILB's to look out for in the draft:

1. Rey Maualuga, USC
2. Darry Beckwith, LSU
3. Brian Cushing, USC ( moved inside, one of the best coverage linebackers in the draft)
4. Jasper Brinkley, South Carolina
5. James Laurinaitis, Ohio. Didn't attend the senior bowl so his stock is bound to be slipping to early second.

Cushing is not good in coverage, he's so bad. I don't think half of the people that talk about him actually watch him. Laurinaitis is a pretty bad fit for the 3-4.

I do like Maualuga, Beckwith, and Brinkley.

Beckwith at 2? Hm...I like him but he's definitely not top 3 worthy. He's very undersized and has been getting blown up on blocks so far in Senior Bowl pratice. I say no to Beckwith. Cushing is okay, not very good at shedding blocks but very good in coverage. Then again Mayo is our Will and should be the best at coverage. Maualuga and Brinkley are what we need. Run stuffing, blitz boys. Mayo is our coverage guy.

Laurinaitis is 4-3 ILB....

I respectfully disagree almighty GM, but Beckwith is severely undersized and injury prone and Cushing has actually been called one of the best coverage LB's in the senior bowl. Look at the practice recaps on the home page. They say Cushing is the best in coverage by far.

The thing is..Mayo is a run stuffer and a sure tackler, but hasn't shown much in the coverage game. That's why I'm suggesting some guys that could cover tight ends and running backs as well as stuff the run.

Look man, I hear what you're saying, but we'd be at a huge disadvantage with only one linebacker over 245. Beckwith is 233...Not very ideal size at all. I don't think that Mayo was asked to drop back in coverage very much for the Vols and therefore, thay is the weak point in his game right now. But that can be polished pretty quickly as he is very quick for a linebacker and very athletic. We need a big guy to take on that extra blocker. The only really pure Mikes in this year's draft are Brinkley and Maualuga. Either one should be at our disposal at some point in the draft. If Rey is gone, Brinkley shouldn't be gone till late second. Running a 4.68 at 270 is scary.

Few thoughts
-I think we should franchise Cassel, it's the best thing to do.
-We need to keep James Sanders, and/or Tank Williams/Rodney Harrison. Ventrone is a STARTER if we don't do this.
-Can someone help me with the overall, numbers wise of all our first four round draft picks?

- We need to curb our expectations on Cassel right now. No GM on this forum is going to give us a first rounder. Quite frankly i'd be surprised if anyone is interested in him via trade. I say we forget the franchise tag and re-sign him. Then if someone wants him they can get him through a trade. If no-one wants him then he stays as a backup. Plus it would be cheaper than a tag. I also want to know some more about the process of re-signing guys. Who determines the contract? Are there any penalties for trading players? We have to show people we're willing to keep Cassel otherwise we're at their mercy in terms of trade value.

- Keep Harrison and Sanders.

Lets target OLB, ILB and CB in the draft (in that order). Linebacker needs a complete overhaul and there simply isn't much talent at CB.

I'm also interested to hear some thoughts on Percy Harvin. It would be a cute pick but it would leave us threadbare on D. I honestly don't see how anyone can complain about Moss-Welker-Gaffney. If we're worrying about the 4th WR then we're in a damn good position.

I think Mayo with time will be able to be a good cover LB, so someone like Cushing should not considered in my opinion. Jasper Brinkley in the third or Maulaga should he drop to 23 will be the only real options at ILB.

At OLB i think most of the great prospects will be gone at 23, we will have to reach for one or wait for one in the second.

Kevin Ellison or Louis Delmas would be good picks at SS, especially Ellison for his football smarts and general work ethic.

Just some quick thoughts. More detailed stuff to come.

In reality, I'm thinking the Pats will either franchise Matt Cassel, or sign him to a decent one-year contract with incentives if he plays while Brady is on P.U.P.. I'm not sure if we're suppose to be realistic and gauge Brady's injury with FFMD, or if we have to just assume that he'll be back, 100% healthy. If someone could clarify this small curiosity I have, that would help out a lot. Until I find out, I say franchise Matt Cassel as well. What does everyone else think? This is pretty much going to be the consensus decision, I'm sure of it. I've seen it often enough in mock drafts to believe in that. Laughing

I didn't want to be re-signing as many people, but all the people i have re-signed are either players that suit our team etic of versatility or are team leaders like Harrison, who can definitely still contribute.

I don't see many other options available at punter, so Hanson may be our cheapest option.

If we go with the order Finn suggested, which is;

1. OLB
2. MLB
3. CB

I suggest the pick in round one being Clint Sintim. Unlike Aaron Maybin, Sintim is a linebacker, and has played linebacker in the 3-4 in virginia. Maybin and English have spent most their college careers at DE. Making the move from 4-3 DE to 3-4 olb isn't simple, just look at gholston with the jets this year. We need to take a proven linebacker, IMO sintim is our guy.

The only thing is, if we try to re-sign Cassel, we are going to have to get in a bidding war.
