Joe Johnston has just been signed to direct the Capt. America movie that comes out in May 2011.
| Quote: | Joe Johnston has inked a deal to direct "First Avenger: Captain America," Marvel Studios' take on its classic comic book character. Marvel's Kevin Feige is producing.
No writers are on board, but the studio, which is hearing pitches, expects to hire shortly.
Johnston first met with Marvel two years ago. When the two parties clicked, general talks turned into Captain America-specific meetings, with much of the project's current direction resulting from those early conversations.
"This is a guy who designed the vehicles for 'Star Wars,' who storyboarded the convoy action sequence for 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' " Feige said. "From 'Rocketeer' to 'October Sky' to 'The Wolfman,' you can look at pieces of his movies and see how they lead to this one." |
While I'm sure he wouldn't have the first choice for many of us as the director of this film, he has directed one of my favorite movies of all time, The Rocketeer. And if he can bring that feel and style to the Capt. America movie, I think it will be just fine. What say you FF, yay or nay on Johnston? _________________

It really depends on how the script is. "October Sky" is a good movie that he directed. Otherwise I haven't seen much of his work, I've obviously seen his work with Star Wars and Indiana Jones without knowing it. I think that he could do a decent job with it though. _________________ Gnat's Movie Reviews

The Rocketeer was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Now I dont know if thats a good thing, or a not so good thing.
But if the man did the storyboarding for convoy scene in Indiana Jones, at least it seems he knows good action. _________________

Alright!! The dude who designed some vehicles for Star Wars is directing the Cap. movie!! one more for emphasis:
Also, why the "First Avenger" part?? Come on, this is gonna be Cap's first (major) blockbuster. Keep it simple: "Captain America". Having the "First Avenger" part makes it sound so amateurish/straight-to-DVD.
Ugh. Let's hope news starts to get more positive as time goes on. That's what happened, for the most part, with "Incredible Hulk". Everything about that production, besides having Ed Norton, screamed "heinous". I thought it was gonna be a mess. Even the poster looked like a ten minute Photoshop job done by a middle-schooler. It wasn't until the fantastic trailer came out that I started feeling cautiously optimistic. _________________

The Rocketeer most certainly can only be a good thing!
I still watch that movie to this day, I don't know what about it I love but ever since I saw it in theaters as a wee lad I have enjoyed that movie very much. Since Cap will be a period piece, I have faith Johnston can bring that WWII vibe without a problem.
Johnston is also directing the upcoming Wolfman with Benecio del Toro, just an FYI. _________________

I don't know squat about Cpt. America, but Johnston is a decent director. Rocketeer was solid, October Sky was a pretty good movie, and buzz on Wolfman is pretty solid so far.
Like Gnat said, its all going to depend on the script and the casting. _________________

Yeah, they are working on bringing in screenwriters now. The only move after that will be to cast it then.
There was a rough draft done by somebody apparently, though I don't know how much of that will be kept by the new writer or writers. _________________

Hopefully they can get the guy that created the weapons in Lord of the Ring to come on board as a producer. _________________

I've been saying for a while they should pick Jon Hamm. He's incredible as Don Draper in Mad Men and he has the Captain America look about him.

He would have to go blonde of course. That actually isn't a bad choice, but I know a lot of us here on FF are pulling for Ryan Gosling to get it. _________________

Watching the TV show "Life on Mars," it struck me that the lead, Jason O'Mara, would be a great Steve Rogers.
A recent episode even had a scene where a character repeatedly referred to him as "Captain America" -- perhaps a little foreshadowing?
Anyway, thoughts on O'Mara?

If Dom was blond then yeah but I don't think so, O'mara might be okay. What about if they got a no name guy? _________________
