Top 5 Spenders
1. New York Yankees - 209.08M
2. Detroit Tigers - 138.69M
3. New York Mets - 138.29M
4. Boston Red Sox - 133.44M
5. Chicago White Sox - 121.15M
Bottom 5 Spenders
26. Washington Nationals - 54.96M
27. Pittsburgh Pirates - 49.37M
28. Oakland A's - 47.97M
29. Tampa Bay Rays - 43.82M
30. Florida Marlins - 21.84M
Top 5 Payroll Increases
1. Detroit Tigers - 43.50M
2. New York Mets - 20.38M
3. Tampa Bay Rays - 19.70M
4. Toronto Blue Jays - 18.72M
5. Chicago Cubs: 18.66M
Top 5 Payroll Decreases
1. Oakland A's - 31.97M
2. Baltimore Orioles - 27.91M
3. San Francisco Giants - 13.56M
4. Boston Red Sox - 10.09M
5. Minnesota Twins - 9.26M
Spending By Division
1. AL East - 552,180,419 (110.44M per team)
2. AL Central - 459,236,198 (91.8M per team)
3. AL West - 353,416,992 (88.35M per team)
4. NL Central - 512,797,843 (85.47M per team)
5. NL East - 415,784,777 (83.16M per team)
6. NL West - 403,976,368 (80.79M per team)
Other Somewhat Interesting Observations
- Alex Rodriguez earns over 5 million dollars more (27M) than the Marlins' roster (21.84M)
- The American League spent 1,364,833,609 on payroll (an average of 97.49M per team).
- The National League spent 1,332,558,988 on payroll (an average of 83.28M per team).
- Excluding the Yankees, the American League spent 88.9M. Excluding the Marlins, the National League spent 87.38M. When you exclude the outliers, there is no real difference in spending between the leagues.
- The combined payroll of the Marlins, Rays, A's, Pirates, and Nationals is 217.96M. The Yankees' payroll is 209.08M. Essentially, 5 entire teams (at least 125 players) could be had for the money the Yankees spent on payroll.
- The Florida Marlins do not have a player making more than $2M. The New York Yankees have 17 players making $2M or more.
- The average team spent 89.9M this year.
Just a little food for thought. _________________

Jason Giambi also makes more than the Marlins alone. Derek Jeter makes just about the same amount as the Marlins.
I didn't realize the Rays went up almost 20M. _________________

Mariners around where I expected. Once Bedard gets his pay next year and then the extension we will balloon up.
Jays will go up with Rios making like 10.5 a year next year _________________

I was interested to see what type of team I could make with the Florida, Tampa Bay, Washington, Pittsburgh and Oakland rosters. Here's what I came up with:
1.) SS Hanley Ramirez (Florida)
2.) LF Carl Crawford (Tampa Bay)
3.) 3B Ryan Zimmerman (Washington)
4.) 1B Carlos Pena (Tampa Bay)
5.) CF B.J. Upton (Tampa Bay)
6.) RF Jason Bay (Pittsburgh)
7.) 2B Dan Uggla (Florida)
8.) DH Dmitri Young (Washington)
9.) C Paul Lo Duca (Washington)
Bench: Mark Ellis (Oakland)
Bench: Freddy Sanchez (Pittsburgh)
Bench: Josh Willingham (Florida)
Bench: Lastings Milledge (Washington)
1.) Scott Kazmir (Tampa Bay)
2.) Rich Harden (Oakland)
3.) James Shields (Tampa Bay)
4.) Tom Gorzelanny (Pittsburgh)
5.) Ian Snell (Pittsburgh)
RP: Troy Percival (Tampa Bay)
RP: Alan Embree (Oakland)
RP: Kevin Gregg (Florida)
Spot starter/RP: Joe Blanton (Oakland)
RP: Huston Street (Oakland)
RP: Matt Capps (Pittsburgh)
Closer: Chad Cordero (Washington) _________________

Is Hanley Ramirez still on his rookie contract? I was wondering because a player of that caliber should make more or? _________________

Yeah, I believe this is his 3rd season and therefore is eligible for arbitration next year in the offseason. He'll get a big pay raise, but still about 1/5 of what he's worth. Baseball players get jerked around for the first 6 years of their careers until they become eligible for free agency and then sign a big contract either with their own club or with a new one. _________________

I would put Nick Johson at 1B and Pena as the DH.... _________________

Did anyone read that article in ESPN Mag about evening the gap between AL and NL? It just talks about how the NL teams have no incentive to spend as much as the AL teams because that is not their main compettiton. _________________
