Green Bay Packers Mock Off-Season
Notes
- The greatest quarterback of all time has retired.
- Packers already traded Corey Williams to Cleveland for their 2nd Round Pick #57.
Re-Signings
Ryan Grant
John Kuhn
Ruvell Martin
Tory Humphrey
Colin Cole
Tracey White
Atari Bigby
Release/Cuts
Craig Nall
Vernand Morency
Noah Herron (cut)
Carlyle Holiday
Koren Robinson (cut)
Ryan Krause
Tyson Walter
Orrin Thompson (cut)
Frank Walker
Restructures
Kabeer Gbaja Biamila
Retirements
Brett Favre
Rob Davis
Free Agents
Brandon Chillar (SLB) - Brought in for competition and depth at Strong Side Linebacker. I think he will beat out Poppinga for the starting job, but I do think Poppinga will still get playing time on defense.
Joe Toledo (OT) - Played tight end in college, so he is athletic and a good fit in the zone blocking system. Could potentially be the future at tackle if he stays healthy.
Thomas Gafford (LS) - Rob Davis is expected to retire from the game, so Gafford is brought in to take his place as a long snapper.
Tim Rattay (QB) - Mike McCarthy coached him in San Francisco so they go back. Will be brought in to be a solid backup to Aaron Rodgers as well as being a bit of a mentor.
Kris Wilson (TE) - Does everything good, but nothing great. Will come in and be the #2 tight end behind Donald Lee. McCarthy could use Wilson as an H-Back as well, bringing another dimension to our offense.
Draft
- Packers already traded Corey Williams to Cleveland for 2nd round pick #57.
- Receive a 4th round and a 7th round compensatory picks for Ahman Green and David Martin.
- Trade Jarrett Bush to St. Louis for 6th round pick #174
Round 1 pick #30
Kenny Phillips (FS, Miami) - Best player available. He drops to us because of an only average combine and no team in front of us has a dire need for the position. Kenny Phillips will come in and compete for playing time immediately, and I think could take Nick Collins free safety spot part way through the season. Phillips is a play maker which is needed in our defense. Could also play corner if we NEED him to.
Height: 6’2”

40 Time: 4.48
Bench Reps: 19
Vertical: 34”

Final College Season Stats: 82 tackles, 5 pass breakups, 2 interceptions

Round 2 pick #57
Brandon Flowers (CB, Virginia Tech) - Once ranked as the top corner has dropped big time because of poor work outs. Regardless, is still a great football player. With his addition we get another play maker and a corner back that fits well in our system. The most physical corner in the draft. Look for him to come in and play the nickel while waiting to take over for Woodson or Harris.
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 189
40 Time: 4.55
Bench Reps: 14
Vertical: 30”
Broad Jump: 9’9”
Final College Season Stats: 86 tackles, 9 pass breakups, 5 interceptions

Round 2 pick #61
Chris Johnson (RB-KR, East Carolina) - I believe the perfect compliment to Ryan Grant would be a scat back. Well, we find a great one here. Johnson has blazing speed and is shifty. He will come in and return kicks as well as give Grant a breather when ever needed. He has potential to be a 3rd down back as well, but for this year, thats Brandon Jackson's job.
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 197
40 Time: 4.24
Vertical: 35”
Broad Jump: 10’10”
Final College Season Stats: 236 carries, 1,423 yards, 6.0 avg, 17 TDs, 37 receptions, 528 yards, 6 TDs
http://youtube.com/watch?v=XhUhLtAC_Ok
Round 3 pick #92
Eddie Royal (WR-KR, Virginia Tech) - With the releasing of Koren Robinson, the Pack need to pick up a solid wide receiver in the draft. I know that you all are probably thinking about David Clowney with this pick, but the fact is is that Royal is David Clowney with good route running and great hands. Royal could take it to the house anytime he gets his hands on it. He is electric, but also does a good job extending his hands and catching the ball away from his body. He will come in and contribute on special teams right away, as well as give Aaron Rodgers a deep threat on offense.
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 184
40 Time: 4.39
Bench Reps: 24
Vertical: 36”
Broad Jump: 10’4”
20 yrd Shuttle: 4.34
3 Cone: 7.07
Final College Season Stats: 33 receptions, 496 yards, 15 ypc, 4 TD
http://youtube.com/watch?v=rloo1rd4Bl4
Round 4 pick #126
Kellen Davis (TE-DE, Michigan State) - With the signing of Kris Wilson, tight end isn't an immediate need anymore. However I don't think that Wilson and Lee are the long term answers for the position. This is why we draft Davis. Davis is a freak of nature, who is a great blocker and good receiver. Also played DE at Michigan State so we could try him out their as a pass rushing specialist if it doesn't work out at tight end. Will come in and be the #3 tight end which adds depth to the spot.
Height: 6’7”
Weight: 262
40 Time: 4.59
Bench Reps: 22
Vertical: 28”
Broad Jump: 9’10”
20 yrd Shuttle: 4.38
3 Cone: 7.25
Final College Season Stats: 32 receptions, 513 yards, 16.0 ypc, 6 TDs

Round 4 compensatory
Breno Giacomini (OT, Louisville) - He has a combination of great size and athleticism. He has a great motor, but does have to get better leverage when blocking. He is a better pass than run blocker, but not bad at it. Needs to add bulk and experienced for he is only a one year starter. He will get the chance to add those things while backing up Clifton and Tauscher for a couple of years.
Height: 6’7”
Weight: 303
40 Time: 5.20
Bench Reps: 23
Vertical: 22.5”
Broad Jump: 9’0”
20 yrd Shuttle: 4.63
3 Cone: 7.56
Round 5 pick #157
Lionel Dotson (DT, Arizona) - With the trading of Corey Williams, defensive tackle loses depth. We find it here with Dotson. He has a motor that keeps going and excels in the pass rush. Although his straight line speed isn't the best, he is a very quick penetrator and has the closing burst to get to the quarterback or runner. Wouldn't be a great nose tackle, but definitely replaces Williams as the pass rushing defensive tackle.
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 296
40 Time: 5.38
Vertical: 25”
Broad Jump: 8’3”
20 yrd Shuttle: 4.75
3 Cone: 7.62
Final College Season Stats: 50 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks

Round 6 pick #174
Dennis Dixon (QB, Oregon) - Tore his ACL at the end of his college season. Otherwise, could of been one of the top quarterbacks in the draft. Dixon is still rehabbing and plans to run and workout for NFL teams at his pro day on 04/03. Great athlete with good speed and running ability, but does consider himself a pocket passer. Has good arm strength but does need to work on consistency in his accuracy. He is a bit of a developmental project but with Mike McCarthy he could turn out to be great. Will come in and be the 3rd string quarterback while learning the offense and developing his skills.
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 195
Projected 40 Time: 4.58
Final College Season Stats: 172 / 254, 2,136 yards, 67.7 %, 20 TDs, 4 interceptions
http://youtube.com/watch?v=-oBOZq9uHR0
Round 7 pick #221
Isaiah Gardner (CB, Maryland) - A very athletic and physical corner. Maybe too physical for he did tend to get quite a bit of pass interference calls. Will come in and compete for a spot on the team. Fits the bump-and-run system well with great size and strength. Probably will be on the practice squad.
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 197
40 Time: 4.40
Bench Reps: 16
Vertical: 42.5”
Broad Jump: 11’0”
20 yrd Shuttle: 4.12
3 Cone: 6.99
Final College Season Stats: 63 tackles, 4 pass breakups, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble
Round 7 Compensatory
Marcus Richardson (WLB, Troy) - Has decent size and is very athletic. Good at coverage and could even play safety. I see him being on the practice squad, but would be a great special teams player. Has trouble getting off blocks but is a great tackler. Much better fit as a weak side linebacker. He adds depth to the linebacking core.
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 235
40 Time: 4.53
Bench Reps: 22
Vertical: 34.5”
Broad Jump: 9’9”
20 yrd Shuttle: 4.40
3 Cone: 6.70
Final College Season Stats: 60 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 1 interception
Undrafted Free Agents
Drew Miller (C-G, Florida)
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 303
40 Time: 5.06
Bench Reps: 34
Vertical: 30”
Broad Jump: 9’3”
20 yrd Shuttle: 4.48
3 Cone: 7.49
Xavier Omon (RB, Northwest Missouri State)
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 228
40 Time: 4.52
Bench Reps: 17
Vertical: 38.5”
Broad Jump: 9’7”
20 yrd Shuttle: 4.29
3 Cone: 6.71

Rocky Schwartz (SS, Houston)
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 204
40 Time: 4.42
Bench Reps: 25
Vertical: 41.5”
Broad Jump: 10’2”

I see absolutely nothing wrong with this mock, like (almost) all of the picks. Good Job! _________________

I think this is a real solid draft. I like going defense first, then offense in the mid-rounds; there's a lot of offensive talent in that area. And all the positions taken are good places for us to put new players to fill out an even roster with all the players TT has stockpiled these past few years.
And I really want to give a shoutout for the Va. Tech picks, I watch them anytime they're on ESPN, because Frank Beemer puts together amazing defense and special teams, not to detract from the offense. "Electric" is the perfect word for Royal, it seemed like every time he touched the ball when I saw him he'd gain at least 20 yards. |

Great job. Probably the best mock I've seen yet, IMO. I would be so pumped if this is how the draft goes. _________________

I like pretty much all of it except, koren robinson shouldnt be cut and although phillips will probly be BPA there, i dont really like him, i like our safety core alot right now and i think we should take an offensive lineman there and then address safety later on
Otherwise great job man! _________________

If we get Phillips, Flowers and Davis in this draft I would be the happiest Packer fan alive. Flowers is by far the best CB for us in this draft. He would fit in great with Woodson and Harris as the nickel. Phillips would push Collins possibly to CB and let Rouse concentrate on being a ST demon. Davis has tons of potential and would be a great number three TE for us until he is ready to get more action at the number two. _________________

I guess my opinion is quite contrary to most here...
I think its an OK mock at best, not really sold on your players. I'll explain...
Koren Robinson (cut) - How does this help our team? We release him and then need to find not only another receiver capable of playing at the consistant level he did (dont get me wrong, he's nothing special at WR, but the kid has talent). But my biggest beef with cutting K-Rob is his KR ability. There are only so many "Devin Hesters" that come around. We know K-Rob isnt one of em haha. But he still does FAR BETTER than most when called on. He's shifty, and I believe has the threat to take it to the house.
Kabeer Gbaja Biamila - Why does he take a pay cut? He just came off a ten sack season playing only passing downs. Yes, he is coming to the end of his career soon enough. But at the same time he has EARNED the money we are paying him. He played for the minimum salary - or close to it - (i believe) for quite a few years before he got his contract. Doesn't he only have one year left on the deal? And we do need to spend SOME of our $$. I don't see us bringing in any big $$ FA's anymore.
Round 1 pick #30
Kenny Phillips (FS, Miami)
- Like this pick, but highly improbable he slips past carolina, philly, denver, AND minnesota. Each team would find value in him, and I don't think his combine was TOO horrible where it would discourage teams from taking the risk v reward approach.
Round 2 pick #57
Brandon Flowers (CB, Virginia Tech)
Height: 5’10”
Weight:[/b] 189
40 Time: 4.55
Vertical:30”
OK, so Flowers. He COULD end up being a solid player. But IMO, nothing more. Look at Harris and Woodson. They have him by 3". Each is 6'1" (packers.com). You can't tell me that without an AMAZING vertical (30 is good, but nothing spectacular for a DB), that flowers in 5 years can pair up with CJ, who is 6'5" and ran a 4.35 40 time. That is 7" difference. On top of that...CJ has a 42 1/2" vertical. He's 7" taller, and can jump 12" HIGHER. If the lions can get it together (they will eventually IMO), we would be SCREWED. I know numbers are not everything in football. But when mismatches are played out, I want our CB's to have every advantage they can against our opposition. Drafting a 5'10" (i've heard thats generous) CB is a VERY RISKY decision to me. The only thing Flowers has going for him is that he is physical. But he's also the same weight at Harris, who got manhandled by plaxico last year. Harris and Flowers arent the same player obviously, but I'm playing the odds here saying this pick isn't in our best interest.
Round 2 pick #61
Chris Johnson (RB-KR, East Carolina)
Decent pick, I could see this. Johnson is high risk high reward. Good chance he flops at the pro level when great speed is minimized as a weapon and shiftiness is maximized. Not sure how well he can run in between the tackles.
Round 3 pick #92
Eddie Royal (WR-KR, Virginia Tech)
"With the releasing of Koren Robinson..."
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 184
40 Time: 4.39
Vertical: 36”
So TT is going to ANTICIPATE releasing Koren on draft day. When chances are IF we cut him, he will be cut on our final roster cuts. However, just looking at his measurables and his draft grade (since I havnt seen him play...) I would be fine with this pick. BUT, he is in the mold of another Jennings. Here are Jennings combine results...
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 197
40 Time: 4.42
Vertical: 36 1/2”
Very similar if you ask me. That is why he intrigues me. But do we need two of the same recievers? We have DD, Jennings, Jones. DD leaves in the next 5 years IMO, maybe as soon as the next few years. That leaves us with Jennings as the GO-TO, deep threat, quick cut reciever. And Jones playing is possession receiver role still. I think we need to look for the next "DD" of this draft. DD's a jumper, with decent speed, great hands.
Round 4 pick #126
Kellen Davis (TE-DE, Michigan State)
Height: 6’7”
Weight: 262
40 Time: 4.59
Good pick here. Havnt seen him in most drafts, but has killer potential.
Round 4 compensatory
Breno Giacomini (OT, Louisville)
Havnt seen him play. But if he has the nasty that Spitz has (hailing from louisville as well), Id be happy with this pick.
Round 5 pick #157
Lionel Dotson (DT, Arizona)
Any relation to Santana Dotson by chance?? Interesting pick.
Round 6 pick #174
Dennis Dixon (QB, Oregon)
Havnt seen much on him. Not sold, but he has a Garrard look about his play from what i have seen. Would fit "new" post-brett pocket passer, safe throws kind of mold.
Good 7th round picks, but I would rather pick up players who can contribute on special teams this year. Not practice squad players. But who knows.
So, I suppose thats my take on your picks. Overall OK draft. It gets better towards the end. I could see those picks happening. But I am VERY skeptical about your rounds 2-4. Round 2 I would go a very different direction in, and 3 and 4 are players I'm not too familiar with, and not sure if they completely fit in (WR pick), or how talented they are (TE and OT picks).
Good read though. Thanks for your analysis and the time you spent making it look good. (Honestly, It's appreciated esp after seeing all the details you put in when I dissected it. Good work.) |

I'm a real big fan of this guy, having seen him quitea few times at least. OK, so Royal isn't a Devin Hester, but that's why he's a 3rd round pick instead of a 1st rounder. And since we seem to agree that there's a good chance he might also help us as a receiver down the road, something Hester really hasn't done outside of decoy duty for the most part, he is a good pick for now as a returner who I believe is better than our current options, and a good pick for later as a WR.
And who would complain about having two players of Greg Jennings' calibur??? Yes, it would be nice to have a Driver clone to take over later, but more than the leaping ability, it takes GUTS to go over the middle like that. And I wouldn't mind sending two receivers deep on opposite sides of the field once in awhile, make the safety have a REALLY tough decision. |
