Wow, this is... weird. Why the heck would a QB do this in a small/medium college?

Possible thought process:
1. I am a quarterback at a small/medium sized college.
2. Unless I am absolutely spectacular, it is likely I will be a mid to late round draft pick and not get much money.
3. Even if I am drafted, I am likely not going to see much money in my career, if I even make it to my second contract.
4. Here's a guy who is offering me cash right now.
5. Who is going to care about me maybe affecting the spreads in games against Toledo?

As for the last question, there are two answers:
1. The commissioner of the NFL.
2. Bettors.

For all of you who are laughing at this, think about this for a moment:
Right now, according to vegas.com, Navy is favored by 20.5 points at Temple. A three touchdown home underdog sounds like it could be an interesting bet, so you go with Temple to cover.

Late in the 4th quarter, Temple is down 23 but driving towards Navy's endzone. All they need is a score and you cover. Let's say the quarterback is involved in a point shaving scandal, and on a critical 3rd down, he intentionally holds onto the ball and takes a sack, putting the team out of field goal range. Whereas before you might have made some nice cash, now you are SOL.

Big spread games, especially these little guys against bigger name opponents, can get some action. Perhaps not as much as say Ohio State-Michigan, but a fair amount their its own right.

Whoever thinks this is real is dumb. Look at the evidence, it is horrible.

Quote:
According to The Hartford Courant, one of the games being investigated is the University of Connecticut's 39-10 victory over Toledo in the Motor City Bowl in 2004. The Huskies were a three-point underdog.

Gradkowski, who played despite hand and shoulder injuries, was 6-of-12 for 42 yards before being pulled to start the second half.
Ummm....ok.....you ever think QBs get hit and the injuries could be bothering him? Its stupid, then another game is one he got a concussion in and didn't finish the game so now they're all like "OMG HE DIDNT PLAY HE IS SHAVING POINTS!1!!1111one1!oeneonexclamationpoint"

The part I look at is "one of the games being investigated."

Also, two questions:
1. Which shoulder & hand were hurt? Throwing or non-throwing?
2. How did those passes look before he was pulled? Was he completely missing his targets, or throwing a lot of balls in the wrong directions?

In general, the FBI doesn't go around just randomly pointing at bad games and say "that guy is involved in point shaving."

EDIT: Here's a little more in depth article from ESPN.

People will bet on anything, I'm convinced that in a couple of years you will see people betting on fencing and lacrosse on "60 Minutes"

2 or 3 years ago Toledo was a top 25 team(along with Bowling Green) so I imagine a lot of people bet on them at the time, which was the same time he played. Although I live in Toledo and have not heard of this yet.

I like Toledo to, mainly cause my dad went to college there. They dont produce all that many pros, and now one of the few are being investigated by the FBI for point shaving. Ugh, not the publicity Toledo is looking for from one of their stars.

Now I wonder if Chester Taylor may have been involved also?? Hope not but he did play for Toledo a couple years ago.
