So the season has officially begun. Here are some notes from the beginning of camp.

#1. Both the Dolphins, and Landry, are happy with him playing out the final year of his contract. The Phins will franchise tag him after the season. It gives the Phins an opportunity to see which players step up this year, and which will be cut for performance/salary cap reasons.

#2. For the first time since Marino was running the offense, the passing game, from the first day, looked like it was in mid season form. Tannehill has consistently hit the receivers in the hands, no matter where they are on the field. Out routes, in routes, seam routes, routes over the middle, the ball has been where it needs to be. It has been such an improvement, that Omar Kelly, who hates Tannehill with a passion, has been singing his praises so far. DVP, who needs to step up this year to keep his job, has been on fire. He has been getting his body in great position to make the catch. Here is a summary of the 11 on 11 big plays, showcasing a new approach.

DVP lined up outside, 4 WR set. DVP fakes an in route, waits a second, then turns up field. 3 steps up field the ball drops in the basket and DVP beats the S for the TD up the sideline.

Redzone. DVP from the outside, 3 WR. DVP runs a slant, then turns and breaks hard outside. Ball drops in the basket, over the shoulder, TD.

Ajayi on play action. Ajayi blocks, then sneaks into the flat. Tanny pump fakes, Ajayi streaks down the field, ball drops in the basket, TD.

Gase has shown allot of misdirection type of routes, where it is scripted for the receiver to get the coverage going one way, and then the receiver breaks for the open spot in the coverage. Tanny has been able to drop the ball in the open field, showing great timing and touch, right on target. This is a new wrinkle in the offense.

#3.There have been a lot of timed, designed runs. Basically the play looks like a pass, until at the last second Tanny takes off. The media hasn't released allot of details, so these may be option type plays.

#4. The entire defense is being moved around allot. The LB's are all playing all 3 positions. The DE and DT rotate left to right, and inside and outside. Based on what the offense is doing, any defender, could be lined up anywhere. Same with the secondary, with CB and S moving around. The team has worked on a ton of sub packages as well.

#5 Drake, at this point, is running away with the 2nd RB position. Drake is running harder then the media has ever seen, and he has become a weapon out of the backfield. Formations have been kept pretty secret, but on one play, both Drake and Grant were on the same side of the field. Grant went deep, leaving Drake wide open in the flat. It would have been a huge gain.

#6. The players have a different demeanor this year. They move with a purpose, and have pushing each other hard. Everyone seems to be on the same page. The coaching staff hasn't needed to get on to the players much, if at all.

Ajayi got that concussion from a cheap shot from McDonald. From what I have read, Ajayi was just finishing a run and McDonald decided to lower his shoulder into Ajayi's ear hole. McDonald pulled up after delivering the big hit, but the damage was done. Ajayi never saw McDonald, and I am pretty sure the he thought that the play was over.

McDonald apologized to the media, and said that he was only trying to thump Ajayi, and didn't mean to hit him in the head.

I think that McDonald was trying to earn some respect. Problem is, that play needs to be heads up, one on one if you are trying to prove something, not a blind side hit.
