NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports the Panthers are expected to re-hire ex-general manager Marty Hurney on an "interim" basis.

Per Pelissero, Hurney met with owner Jerry Richardson on Tuesday. Hurney would run the team in 2017 as it "(uses the) coming months to vet full-time candidates." The Panthers' general manager from 2002-12, it has to be assumed there's a chance Hurney reclaims his old job on a permanent basis. Hurney assembled a few solid rosters from 2003-08, but things went off the rails due to poor drafts and even worse salary cap management. The Panthers are taking a gigantic step backward from Dave Gettleman. It's frankly surreal this is the way things are unfolding in Charlotte.

Davis and Olsen gonna love them 5 year/50 mil extensions. Welp, back to cap hell and mediocrity.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera says he was "surprised" by the firing of GM Dave Gettleman.

Rivera, though careful not to seem to disagree with owner Jerry Richardson, said he had a good relationship with Gettleman. "No matter how tense things got, we always talked our way through it," Rivera claimed. Rivera added he does not believe his own job is in danger. Rivera is currently signed through 2018.

Hurney on an interim basis, okay. But if they seriously re-hire Hurney, this franchise is a disaster. Hurney is horrible. Everyone brings up his hits, but he was horrible at building depth. The 2011 draft was pathetic. And lets not even get started on his cap management.

I really think they (and pray) they are only doing this to just have someone there to handle in-season GM duties and that they aren't really considering Hurney as the future.

And who have we really brought in since we opened up some cap room? The O-Line has been an issue for years. We're lucky we got as much out of Oher as we did the Super Bowl year and nothing was done to improve things last season. Bringing in Kalil isn't necessarily a big step up based on his career thus far.

I see the rationalizations have begun.

Most of our money was spent on keeping our owns guys. Cam, Luke, Olsen, Kalil, Short, TD, Stew - all big paydays for the most part.

As far as FAs go... Kurt Coleman, Ted Ginn, Jerricho Cotchery, Michael Oher, Mike Mitchell, Quintin Mikell, Mario Addison, Colin Cole, Drayton Florence, Chris Scott, Charles Tillman, Cortland Finnegan, Andy Lee, Mike Remmers... all of these guys have contributed to the team in one way or another. Now we have Peppers, Captain, Adams, and Kalil this offseason which seems to be a pretty solid group.

The OL market has been terrible. Jared Veldheer and King Dunlap off the top of my head have been big LT signings recently. Ryan Clady and Russell Okung if you want to go the old injury prone route. We haven't been in a position to draft a great OT prospect.

It's not really a rationalization. I'm not a big fan of firing Gettleman, particularly not the timing of it. But let's also not lionize the guy while we're at it. The biggest complaint all of us have had about this team for the last 3+ years is the OLine. It's been mediocre at best. And with all the money we freed up after the first year or so with Gettleman ... not a ton of it was spent on bringing in players to help shore that up and get us over the hump.

Well it is entirely possible we tried to sign someone but we didn't match bigger contract offers. In any case, despite the crap OLine, we won three division titles and then went to the Super Bowl with Michael Oher and Mike Remmers at tackle. And like I said, most teams lock up their good, young OTs. Name a free agent we could have afforded before this offseason when we finally had a lot of money to burn.

Marty Hurney - G - Panthers
Panthers hired Marty Hurney as interim general manager.

As expected. Hurney, who was the overseer of the Panthers from 2002-2012, ran the organization into the ground before being fired in 2012 and succeeded by Dave Gettleman. Now the reverse happens five years later, and Hurney will guide the team through the 2017 season before a permanent GM is hired next offseason. Veterans like Greg Olsen and Thomas Davis are licking their chops as they're sure to get the extensions they've been seeking. Hurney made a habit of handing out bad contracts when he was last at the helm. Luckily for Carolina fans, Hurney isn't expected to be the GM for next year's draft.

This team...

Watching a Hurney press conference was disgusting. "Dave did a great job" he said a few times.

Absolutely sick. Can't wait until we have a diffferent owner.

Based on his press conference, he used the term "groom" the next GM.

I think he's here moving forward as either the GM, Director of Player Personnel or Team President. Yuck.
