The thing that you have to remember is that the Cubs window for championships is wide open. You don't want to waste years like that. Quintana's contract will end right when the Cubs have to start paying guys like Bryant huge amounts of money, and he's so cheap that they can afford to add another big free agent arm or position player.

Jimenez is a great prospect, but the Cubs have quite a few options for the corners, and he wasn't going to make a big impact for a couple more years, when the team's window for winning championships is starting to narrow. The same thing goes for Cease - he's not going to be on a major league team for a few years unless it's in the bullpen.

He's going to be great for the Cubs. His contract also gives them the flexibility to be very aggressive in FA if they want to.
