If Pryor beats out Peppers, he will have been one hell of a bust.

Interesting move. Davis is probably the better player, but he wasn't really needed in Cleveland. At the very least Pryor gives us some depth. Maybe he can play better in a role similar to Mark Barron?

Just because the Browns have Peppers doesn't mean acquiring Pryor makes no sense. Pryor could very well be just a backup. Also, Peppers is likely going to be used in a lot of different ways.

Browns are going to be playing a lot of 4-2-5 formations. That front 7 is shaping up to be insanely talented

Garrett--Bryant--Shelton--Ogbah
Rotating: Carl Nassib, Caleb Brantley and Larry Ogunjobi

Kirksey--Collins
Rotating: Joe Schobert, Domique Alexander

Haden--McCourty--Taylor
Rotating: Howard Wilson, Brien Boody-Calhoun

Peppers--Kindred
Rotating: Calvin Pryor, Tyvis Powell, Kai Nacua

Is there truth to the 4-2-5 speculation? Dont see a ton of that nowadays

Agreed, wish we would see a little more of them. Not as much as baseball but a decent amount.

Just seems Cleveland is trying to strike gold at any angle they can. Which isn't necessary a bad thing. I don't think they got Pryor to be some long term back up though. Probably will give him a chance to succeed this year and if he fails he's gone.

That's the standard nickel. It's often used more than any given team's base defense. You can quibble that the DE are LB, so it's a 2-4-5, but there is no real distinction.

Yeah player roles are interchangeable, whether it be DE/LB or LB/S you can run a 4-3/4-4/4-2 all with the same personnel if you have the right personnel.

Depending on the down and distance you will see Peppers play the 3rd DB in box and if its a passing down you will see Peppers play deep safety and Jamar Taylor as the nickle DB. Its clear that the Browns will only have Kirksey and Collins on the field as Linebackers with the occasional rotating Joe Schobert.

The Broncos ran a bunch of 5-2-5 over the past 2 years with Wade Phillips with TJ Ward blitzing in the Peppers role. It only works when you have the proper cover DBs and pass rush. I think Ogbah and Garrett will be a top 3 pass rush tandem inside 2 years. Its up to the Browns FO to get elite DBs to add with their 5 picks inside the first 2 rounds next year to complete the defense.

Am I the only one who thinks browns can be a top 10 defense this year

The pieces are stacking up and we have the coordinator to do it, it will be interesting to see.

?

Gregg Williams hasn't led a Top 10 scoring defense since 2010. His defenses have mostly been average.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/WillGr0.htm

He isn't some genius Defensive Coordinator. He's an above average one, but that's about it. And frankly, while the Browns have a lot of young talent in place, they aren't exactly the best defensive roster he's had either.

Rams defense was top 10 in points per game and points per drive allowed in each of GW's first two years here. This past year, our defense was top 5 until the team quit down the stretch.

He's not the best DC in the NFL, but he's a very good DC. He runs an aggressive bend-but-don't-break scheme, so the yardage numbers will never reveal how good his defense is. His defenses with the Rams thrived on third downs and in the red-zone.

The Broncos ran a bunch of 5-2-5 over the past 2 years with Wade Phillips. It only works when you have the proper cover DBs and pass rush.

It also only works with blind officials.

No, it works when you have arguably the best secondary of all time by the numbers Wink

I don't know if you didnt notice or are being sarcastic, but you said 5- 2- 5. That would be 12 men on the field. You're only allowed 11... lol
