Here's my thing about S/LB tweeners. If you can't do all the things a safety will be asked to do (e.g. play single high) or all the things an LB will be asked to do (e.g. run fills) there are down/distance/formation combinations that make it so you shouldn't be on the field. A guy who is exclusively a subpackage player, isn't really worth premium resources like big money or day 2 picks.

The reason I feel better about Jones than I do about your Mark Barrons and your Su'a Cravens of the world is that I (until evidence points otherwise) that Jones can actually play safety (which is to say he can do all of the safety things). "Coming down in the box for extra support against the run and short-passing game" is one of those things. I don't know why we have to call a safety who can do that, like safeties have been doing forever, something other than a safety.

Jones is probably Burnett's replacement, not an eventual starting ILB.

Am I the only one who looked at that list and immediately saw that Blake Martinez was the third best rookie inside linebacker in the league last year in QB rating allowed and that he was behind Deion Jones by only 2.3 points?

Or is everybody else still focused on that one guy being really wrong on Cravens?

Blake was 7th. Cravens was 4th but the top 3 were excluded it looks like.

No, Cravens was first among all rookie ILBs. He was 4th league-wide.

He's the GOAT, can we have our thread back?

Kidding, sort of.

I liked Cravens coming out. I absolutely didn't watch enough WAS to form any view on him so I had no idea how good he was or wasn't, tbh.

I thought the actual topic here was interesting. Like someone had just said, safeties who can come and play in the box aren't a new invention.

While this isn't the best proof of the point being made in this thread, I would like to say that Madden has had a Dime defense where the 3rd safety (I believe for Madden it's the backup SS) plays the same position as a ILB in the nickel.. like I said, madden is not a "end-all" argument point... BUT if madden recognized that safeties were playing in the box years ago then it's probably not a new invention thanks to Buchanan and Cravens

Code:

Thomas Davis

Measurable   Measurement   %tile

Weight         230 lbs       98
40 Yard Dash   4.6s          36
Vertical Jump   36"         62
Broad Jump      115"         17
20 Yard Shuttle   4.01s      90

Code:

Josh Jones

Measurable   Measurement   %tile
Height         6' 1"         56
Weight         220 lbs       90
Arm Length      32"          57
Hand Size       9⅜"          51
40 Yard Dash    4.41s        94
Vertical Jump   37"         76
Broad Jump      132"         96
Bench Press      20 reps     78

I can see that comp athletically. Obviously Jones is faster and has more burst, but at 220 and not 230.

My brain has been brutally conditioned to look for the phrase ACL in any text communication. You could give me a ten thousand page document and I could give you every usage of the phrase in 47 seconds.

Don't do what you just did. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Sounds like Jones is the big winner so far in OTAs, he's all over the field making plays.

What's the best source for info regarding OTAs? No longer live in Wisconsin and don't know the best sources to read anymore. Have tomorrow and Friday off though so might as well catch up on things that actually interest me.
