I was reading Bleacher Reports Bengals Draft Preview and ran across this nugget. Probably the most accurate description of Dalton I have found. Wanted to share. This was in the existing roster break down.
Starter: Andy Dalton
NFL1000 Score: 66.8/100
NFL1000 Position Rank: 24/38
At this point in Andy Dalton's career, we're just going to have to accept that he is what he is—and isn't what he isn't. He will never be a great deep thrower. He will always challenge his receivers to redefine their catch radiuses. And his work under pressure—both the pressure of opposing defenders and the pressure of the moment—will be left wanting.
He's an efficient quarterback, and on the surface, his 2016 numbers (364 completions in 563 attempts for 4,206 yards, 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions) would seem to put him a cut above the "Alex Smith, Game Manager" category.
Dalton is both better and worse than a low-ceiling quarterback like Smith—he does have a few more obvious physical attributes, but he also takes more chances that he shouldn't. Some teams would be happy to have a quarterback of Dalton's caliber, but it could also be said that he is the most dangerous kind of field general: good enough to make you avoid thinking about his eventual replacement, but not good enough to transcend his surroundings. |

Very accurate about 2-3 seasons ago. He's stepped it up the past 2 seasons though and has taken his game to another level IMO. I'd like to see the list of 23 other players at the position that they think are better than him.
And I'm not even one of his biggest fans on here... |

I think i would struggle to name 23 QB's better than Dalton. I'm sure some on the list there based on their youth, not their merit.
That being said, I don't necessarily disagree with the article text. He is what he is. He's very good when he has a good cast around him (see 2015) and at the very least not the problem when the cast around him isn't good (see 2016). _________________ If you're not in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?

If i remember right, Doug Farrar is one of the guys grading players for NFL1000. He hates Andy Dalton with a burning passion. I'm trying to find the rankings now. _________________ If you're not in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?

Here's the article. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2685170-nfl1000-final-regular-season-breakdown-of-the-leagues-top-players
Yeah these rankings are a little weird. Ryan Tannehill 8th? Siemian ahead of Dalton? Derek Carr all the way down at 17? I mean, i'm sure they had a process that led to this set of rankings, but it certainly doesn't pass a smell test.

Oh, and Farrar is the lead scout. Like i said, he really hates Andy Dalton. So that probably explains some of that. _________________ If you're not in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?

Yea, Farrar was the lead scout on this project. But Cian Fahey is the one who evaluated the QBs. I think Fahey he hates Cousins even more than he hates Dalton. Some of his articles about Cousins in the past have been... inflammatory, to say the least. I take everything that guys says with a grain of salt. |

Ha! I didn't even notice Cousins' ranking. That's even worse than Dalton's, given that Cousins had a pretty decent season.
It's so hard to rank football players' play objectively. Even harder when most of the "professionals" in the business do what they do because they have favorite teams they grew up with and imagined the industry as a dream job where they could get paid for following their team. _________________ If you're not in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?

Sam Bradford is 4. WTF? I definitely am not overvaluing Dalton. I think he is the Mendoza line. |
