Certainly if you are Pace, Fox, or Fangio it's better to draft guys ready to contribute right away.... but maybe it'd be better to take a Sidney Jones, Fabian Moreau, or one of the junior QBs...
Perhaps you bypass the higher upside tackle like an Anthony Garcia for a more steady but maybe not left side worthy product like a Forrest Lamp? Garcia is certainly a risk and Lamp is more of a finished product but Garcia IS a LT with size, skill and nasty take on being a blind side protector....
As Bears fans which path should we take? My answer is both I suppose, take the sure thing at the top and take on guys that maybe need to take an injury year and work them in 2018-19 season.... I'm also on the line of wow those next 2 QB classes look amazing so take it for what it's worth.

Those are the Bears 9 biggest needs as I see it.
A dream draft for me:
S Adams

QB Peterman
TE Hodges
CB Moreau
Best 3-4 End left
OLB depth
I think those picks would best suit our future |

Well yeah if you think Moreau will be around in the 4th. You have to draft this year for this season. You don't pass on a guy because maybe the class for that position is better next. |

Fox is dead in the water, I think Pace has to be looking at next year just as much as this year.
If Jones is waiting in the 4th, you take him regardless of Peterman/Kayaa falling, a long term prospect at a different position that can play right away, etc. He is the one who was a 1st round lock (IMO) in the deepest CB draft I can remember since I really dove into the draft. He might be out a year, but in a 10 year career if you can get him cheap for the first 4 and he sits out his first, you've found a steal.
As far as Lamp vs Antonio Garcia, I feel Lamp is able to play anywhere in the line. He doesn't have that ideal length or freakish athleticism, but the guy just is a vice grip on DL. I feel Lamp is an outstanding guard prospect to very good OT (especially RT) prospect. I'll take that over Garcia any day.
You have to have values for positions (QB is the most important position when all other things are equal, etc) but you have to look at who can be cornerstone players to build around first (regardless of missing a year or not), then who is the most pro-ready or has the best traits/intangibles to succeed. _________________ 2013 Kyle Long Rookie of the Year Award
