He suspects playing football caused it?

I suspect he doesn't have a medical degree.

Yea...I feel bad that he is going through this, but he is horribly misinformed about the cause of the disease.

Eh yeah but I'm sure most NFL players are paranoid about CTE after more and more stories come out about players suffering from it. Yeah he's wrong but it's understandable that he might think it's from playing football

Just awful news. Feel terrible for him, because right now, it's a death sentence for him, and there aren't really any options for him. I can't imagine what's it's like to get that kind of news.

I suspect you don't have a medical degree either. Nice reaction to horrible news.

Feel for bad for him and his family. One of the worst diagnosis you could get.

Awful disease. It's not gradual at all. You're walking and then too months later you are bedridden and can't move anything.

It's not like he didn't hear this news from people with medical degrees and discuss it with them before talking to the media about it. He didn't get diagnosed with a take home test from CVS.

Football players are 6 times more likely to be diagnosed with ALS than the general population. Soccer players, boxers, and other concussion prone athletes have similarly high rates.

The sample sizes make that reeeeeally statistically insignificant, though. ALS occurs at a rate of 1 person in every 50,000. Given that the studies of things like ALS in NFL players typically have a sample size of 3000 - 4000 former players, that means it's impossible to really draw any conclusion from that data. It's incredibly uncommon in the general population, and it's incredibly uncommon in the NFL, but all it takes is one or two NFL players in the sample size to have it for it to seem drastically more common, due to the numbers. You'd need a few hundred thousand former NFL players to make a statistically significant study, there. The largest study included about 7000 players, 4 with ALS, and even it concluded that they couldn't tell if that was statistically significant or random chance. Especially given that ALS is more common in men, and more common in middle-aged men, making retired NFL players more likely to have it regardless of their status of being a former NFL player.

And even the 6x number isn't consistent. Most of what I found said 4 times. But again, we're talking about fractions of a percentage of a percentage in difference, in too small of sample sizes.

Don't get me wrong, it may be that they find a connection someday. Your post just seemed a bit oversimplified, in something that we don't really have a scientifically valid set of data on. At least with CTE, there is a fairly singular and well-accepted cause. ALS has a multitude of causes, along with several theories of possible causes, none of which are entirely accepted. The only cause that is pretty verified and accepted is genetic inheritance. Which isn't really football related.

Also, sources, because that seems significant for this post:

Was more refuting the idea that he's ignorant of the subject just because he thinks there might have been a link than making any specific claim one way or the other. Though you're right, I was a bit too simplistic.

There's also a perfect match for ALS symptoms that is caused by CTE fwiw, but it's an entirely different disease. It's actually speculated that Lou Gherig didn't have ALS, but his 5 serious concussions caused this other disease to manifest.

Yeah, when you have a disease that's as rare as ALS, until you get a bigger sample size, it's impossible to tell if you're just getting a random spike.

Regardless, for Clark and his family, awful news, no matter what.

Devastating. It's worst disease that I think anybody can have. My thoughts are with him and his family.

Agreed. Losing the use of your body, while your mind stays intact is scarier to me than pretty much anything else.

I don't think we should dismiss possible connections to head trauma, at this stage. As far as I'm aware, the actual cause of the disease is unknown, so every possible avenue should be explored. But nor would I point to football and say, 'I think that's what caused it'.
