You're acting like the SLB was getting abused last year. It's really a negligible position and barely is on the field anyway. It is not a need so much as it is irrelevant as long as you don't have a sieve there, which we don't.
You're welcome to believe that. But until they show they're good, we still need to be better than what has been there.
and what does "show that they're good" means?
Have we seen someone who can start at SLB for a full season, not be a liability in coverage, tackle well, generate pressure or be free guy we push players to so they can get the tackle? If not (and it is in fact a no), then we either need a new player or a player to step into that role.

There's no guarantee that Poz can switch positions and be a good player in a new role. There's no guarantee that they're going to move Fowler there. There's no guarantee that Jack can play that role well for long periods of time.

I think we'd be best served to see Jack move to MLB, Telvin stay at WILL and Fowler move to SAM. Put Poz as a 4th LB. I think that would work well. But that doesn't mean it will. That doesn't mean that's what Coughlin thinks should be moved to. Until that works and is done, it's on the list of places where an uptick in production is needed, either by influx of new talent, moving of players, a player developing, or a player taking on a bigger role.

We've spent a lot of time over the last few years with takes like "if Cyp doesn't get better, Sample is back there so we don't need to have someone else" or "House [and before that Colvin, and before that McCray] played really for a few games, so we don't need a CB2" and so on. The fact is that no matter how good of a team you are, whether you're bad like us or great like the Patriots, not every player you think is going to work out in a larger role will actually work out. Maybe shuffling around the LBs turns it into a really great unit, and absolutely with out a doubt the potential for that to be the case is there. But it's not assured. The good teams recognize those potential problem spots where things haven't been proven and they are working off assumptions of role filling and they put in place a plan B. I'm just offering up the positions that aren't truly set where a plan B may be necessary or where the plan a may not be viewed as set as we think it is. Because I'm honestly tired of the team working off the assumption that everything is going to plan out accordingly.
