its a pretty solid deal for a late rounder and an awful TE FA group.
Quote: | He leaves $3M in dead cap to the #Colts, brings cap hits of $4.9M, $5M, & $7.4M to the #Patriots. |
He should be good for 2 years at least. And I think he wasn't used to his full potential and Indy and should be a solid TE to have. I still hope they draft one in the midrounds just because of the amount of TE talent in the draft. _________________

Not great, not terrible. He's a veteran presence at least, and he's shown that he can be a good red zone weapon and chain mover in some instances. And his cap hits are modest given our cap space.
Still, he's not much of a presence in the run game, and he has trouble staying healthy. He always seems to miss a few games per season and missed all but one game of 2013. _________________

Disagree - he's one of the best blocking TEs in the league. I think his contract is a bit pricey but as we saw this year having legitimate Gronk insurance can be invaluable. Plus they can cut/restructure him with no penalty. _________________

Reported as 4th for Allen + 6th. Personally I'm pretty happy, because he seemed like a cool guy when I met him. Play wise, my understanding is he can both block and catch to a decent degree, so should be a decent get.
As an aside, he said he was good friends with Hightower, so here's hoping this helps us in getting him back too... |

Reading mixed things on his blocking. PFF, even if not always reliable, had him ranked as a bottom 3 blocking TE. Not saying you're wrong, but how is there that much disparity? _________________

Only paying a 4th whilst recouping a 6th is barely anything to pay. |

Not sure how much weight it may carry but BB himself praised Allens blocking before and said he was the best blocking TE we'd face that season. _________________

He's pretty similar to Daniel Graham. High end blocker, adequate receiver but not a guy who threatens defenses. I think he should be comparable to what Bennett was after his injuries this year.
His health is a bit of a concern
Decent player but huge step down from Gronkowski when Gronk gets hurt. |

^Pretty much
I'm glad we made this move not really because the player will change the offense (he's really just adequate insurance), but because it removes the need to draft a TE high and focus on other needs |

Big step down from Marty. Hoping this doesnt mean Marty is 100% gone but obviously it is a telling move _________________

Good blocker and ok receiver in that he can't really generate YAC.
Can't complain. It's a pretty cheap contract he's on and we can cut him before it gets expensive. If he makes it through the season healthy and shows up on the field, we can keep him for an additional 2 years _________________

Big step down from a healthy Bennett but they won a Super Bowl with Bennett in a diminished capacity so the offense won't lose much, if anything. |
