Quote:
The New York Giants had a defense capable of winning a championship in 2016, but the offense … not so much.

Not only did the Giants endure a series of injuries along the offensive line and at running back, but they dealt with ineffective play from both units as well. They also struggled with wildly predictable play-calling, having taken roughly 90 percent of all offensive snaps in 11 personnel (one back, one tight end, and three receivers).

Ultimately, the Giants’ offense struggled. And the struggles got worse as the season progressed. Opposing defenses ran basic cover-2’s, essentially shutting down the Big Blue’s deep game and getting pressure with four pass rushers.

The team’s inability to run the ball allowed the safeties to stay deep, while the offensive play-calling came under scrutiny for lacking creativity.

In fact, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reports that the Giants dealt with a little internal drama as it related to the play-calling, with wide receivers (and others) voicing their concerns in-house.

This should be a serious option. Something has to change, whether it be the offensive coordinator or the way they call and design plays. What they did Year 1 with (coach Ben) McAdoo handling head coaching and playcalling duties didn’t work. There were even internal complaints the offense was too vanilla and opposing defenses knew what was coming, especially in the run game. The receivers also didn’t think there was enough creativity to get them open consistently.

During his season-ending press conference, McAdoo said he plans to evaluate “everything” and that included looking at his reflection in the mirror. But despite that, Raanan does not expect McAdoo to relinquish the play-calling duties.
McAdoo has said they’re going to evaluate everything this offseason, playcalling included. He’s going to take a long, hard look in the mirror and decide if he was able to put in the necessary amount of time and for the offense to reach its potential while also juggling his head-coaching duties. My gut tells me there will be changes offensive but McAdoo won’t ultimately relinquish playcalling duties.
Although it’s a feather in the cap of McAdoo that none of this frustration spilled out into the public, it is a very real problem the Giants must address this offseason.
With quarterback Eli Manning’s championship window closing and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. coming up on a new contract, the Giants must find a way to get their offensive production to match their defensive production. If not, there will be another wasted year on the horizon.

The past 3 years we have run the same personnel and we were pretty good. This year was baffling because if our offense was as good as last year then we'd be the best team in the conference probably.

They have the right to complain, the offense was plain and predictable. Can't expect the WR's to get open and have that much success if the defense knows what you're running.
