I know I know there hasn't been much chatter in here cause none of us expected a season like this following a Super Bowl run. We are all disgusted and are looking for heads to be on the chopping block...This isn't one of those posts
I wanted to stir he pot a bit and present y'all with DG's draft picks and how they have panned out thus far. The rating next to them indicate how much of impact they have been to the Panthers. I'd like to hear you thoughts on individual players and DG's drafting methods.
143 days until the NFL Draft...
2013
1) Star Lotulelei-7/10
2) Kawaann Short-8/10(1x Pro bowler. Had one break out year last year)
4) Edmund Kugbil-0/10
5) AJ Klein- 6/10
6) Kenjon Barner- 0/10
2014
1) Kelvin Benjamin- 7/10
2) Kony Ealy- 5/10(Super Bowl-highlight of career)
3) Trai Turner- 9/10 (1x Pro bowler)
4) Tre Boston- 4/10
5) Bene Benwikere- 4/10(Cut this season)
6) Tyler Gaffney- 0/10
2015
1) Shaq Thompson- 8/10
2) Devin Funchess- 6/10
4) Daryl Williams-5/10
4) David Mayo- 4/10
5) Cameron Artis-Payne- 5/10
2016
I can't say too much since it's still early for this draft class. Bradberry looks like he can develop into a very good corner in the next few years. Butler is eh, we haven't seen too much out of him this year and he's been injured. _________________

My changes are in bold. I think Boston's play warrants more than a 4, and CAP hardly ever plays enough to warrant a 5/10. In terms of this year's picks, I like Butler, Bradberry, and Worley. I think Butler coming back has definitely helped our pass rush, even though he isn't necessarily the one putting on the pressure. I think Bradberry can be a very good corner for us and Worley is right behind him. This year had a major learning curve, but I'm hoping that through FA we can solidify the O-line, maybe get another pass rusher (JPP please), and through the draft we suppliment some positions (RB, OL, DL, safety) and get back into the playoffs. |

I'd put Trai turner as a 10. How we got his talent in the third round is nuts. Also would put Star a little higher. He isn't flashy but he is very good at what he does. _________________

Interesting...
I texted something similar to WFNZ last week.
I did a hit/miss for each pick... not a x/10 grade.
In the end, the only thing I learned was that DG is an "average" drafter at GM.
So, I started to think... "well, what makes a good GM"?
Drafting ability, Salary Cap, Wins, FA
well..
Drafting Ability - C
Salary Cap - A (B+?)
Wins - B+
FA - C+
Wins w/ Gentlemen:
2013 - 12-4 (0-1 playoffs)
2014 - 7-8-1 (1-1 playoffs)
2015 - 15-1 (2-1 playoffs)
2016 - 4-8 (miss playoffs I assume)
Total - 38-21-1 (3-3 playoffs)
2013-2015 - .719 W/L
2013-now - .633 W/L
I give him a solid B rating. More than enough to "in DG we trust" still. _________________ Carolina Panthers

I agree, i think he's done a great job. Injuries have killed us this year and losing some games by very low scores. I don't think we ever had a chance of winning last night without Keuchly and missing 2 starting O line and a 4th choice centre against that team would have been rough.
Its easy to look back on drafts and see who we missed out on:
2013:
4) Kugbila - David Bakhtiari was the next pick
6) Kenjon Barner - Andre Ellington, Spencer Ware, Theo Riddick, CJ Anderson (all later or undrafted)
2014
1) Kelvin Benjamin
2) Kony Ealy - Kareem Martin (not sure hes much better)
3) Trai Turner
4) Tre Boston -
5) Bene Benwikere-EJ Gaines (maybe...) Malcolm Butler (everyone missed)
6) Tyler Gaffney- Isiah Crowell (think he was a bad character?)
2015
1) Shaq Thompson - Not really any better so far.
2) Devin Funchess- Tyler Lockett, Stefon Diggs,
4) Daryl Williams- Other tackles have been poor or havent played much yet.
5) David Mayo- No one stands out.
5) Cameron Artis-Payne - Thomas Rawls - OUCH
This is just the positions we drafted in but not bad given that. |

IMO, the Shaq Thompson pick is turning out to be terrible. Nevermind the fact there are games where he rarely sees the field, but he might be an even worse tackler than Tre Boston. He missed like 4-5 tackles last night, maybe more.
He still has a lot of talent and I have hope, but it isn't looking promising so far. I wish they would blitz him more. _________________

The two biggest knocks I have on DG are 1) letting the inconsistent seasons continue and 2) his FA moves.
DG only signs guys to patch holes for a season, maybe two. Resulting in lack of chemistry within certain units(secondary/oline).
He fails to actually open his wallet and spend money in areas where we need sever help. He believes the off the street signings are "bargain buys" and they fail to produce. _________________

Could have had Allen Robinson over Benjamin. Always makes me sad. _________________

I have two problems with DG, one larger than the other.
First, the Norman thing. I still have no idea why the tag was rescinded, like no idea at all.
Second, and more important, the OL. We have a former MVP QB who we invested a ton of money in and who takes a lot of hits. Last year we went to the bargain bin for OL and it panned out to a degree. However, the OL overperformed by quite a large margin last year and that cannot be relied on the following year. The fact that DG did ZERO to improve that area was astonishing and embarrassing. He put Cam in more unnecessary danger by doing that and risked the franchise. This is nearly an unforgivable mistake.
At the moment, DG gets 80% of my blame for this season. Mainly based on the OL. _________________

I know he has Blake Bortles throwing to him (gosh, that guy fell off a cliff this season...), but Allen Robinson has been terrible this season. Robinson may have flashed more than Benjamin has, but I don't see any reason to lament the choice. |

You're right. That guy just has some sort of personal vendetta against KB for some reason. _________________
