For pup the player has to be on it day 1 of tc that's why we put Williams on there.
The ir to return is guys who get injured during tc or later. So Dorsey does seen like an option depending on the surgery.

Right! I had forgotten that about the PUP list. Do we also get a roster exemption with the PUP?

Out of touch and mind, but is there not only one I.R. designation of return for each team to use? Are we not using it for Bowman?

Bowman (and currently a few others) are on the PUP list, which means they have to stay there the first 6 weeks, can be activated then without taking a roster spot to practice for 3 weeks, then needs to go on IR or the 53-man roster. Last year, this is where Manningham, and Crabtree were.

NFI (Non-Football Injury) is a list for players who got injured outside of the NFL practice, and is where the injured rookies will be stashed with similar rules. This is where Carradine, Dial, and Lattimore spent last season.

IR designation to return is something that can go to a player injured at any point and will also remove them from the 53. Has to be a person injured after the start of camp, as those players cannot go on any of the PUP/NFI lists. Last year this was Moody. Once activated, counts against the 53 man roster. If Dorsey can indeed heal up in 3-4 months, he's a candidate for that designation. My guess is the team will wait up until the cutdown to 53 to place that designation on anyone, as each team only gets one of these.

IR is injured reserve. This effectively ends the player's year. This is where Ian Williams and Chris Culliver were last year, and where Kendall Hunter is likely to end up.

Cool.. thanks for the clarification on that, y2. Can never remember or put forth the effort to refresh what I once knew.

Agreed! Stuff like that belongs in a sticky somewhere. Not sure where, though. Would be nice to have a quick reference for pup/ir stuff, division vs. conference playoff tie-breakers, maybe a section for new rules each year.
