Structural steel erection for the $975 million Minnesota Vikings stadium is a daunting task, as evidenced by the gigantic crawler crane one of the largest in the world thats on site to lift beams in place. But the roof work, which involves 11,000 tons of steel, isnt just about towering cranes and dramatic lifts. Construction manager Mortenson Construction will lean heavily on geeky technology known as 4-D computer modeling to make sure the work is successful.

The 4-D model, which overlaps the three dimensions of an architectural model with the fourth dimension of time, explains how steel erection and other work activities will play out, day by day, until the stadium becomes fully enclosed in fall 2015.

Eric Grenz, a Mortenson construction executive: We like to build our projects virtually before we actually get out to the field so we know exactly how it comes together, what we need to be doing from a safety standpoint, from a quality standpoint, and make sure that when we actually hit the ground we can be successful.

Audubon Minnesota, the state office of the world's largest bird-focused conservation group, put out a press release today accusing the Vikings stadium of endangering local and migratory birdkind by refusing calls to make its glass roof and walls more visible to the dumb avians.

"We're talking about a billion dollar stadium here, and the cost to save perhaps thousands of migratory birds and make the Vikings a global leader in green stadium design is about one-tenth of one percent of that," said Audubon Minnesota Executive Director Matthew Anderson. "Hundreds of millions of dollars of public money is going to build this stadium, and we know the people of Minnesota do not want their money killing birds. The Vikings recently approved spending millions and millions of additional dollars to make sure the stadium is 'iconic' surely they also want to make sure it's not a death trap. We're asking them to change their minds and do the right thing."

I believe so. I looked at aerial shots and they're doing something with the lots over there so I'm assuming that's it.
