Texans Release CB Brice McCain

And to think his agent thought he was worth $3.5 to $5 million annually just a year ago...

A year after he resigned with us too. Laughing

Had to be done. Ever since the year he had in 2011, he was never the same. Add nickle CB to our list of needs now. Unless BOB and Crennel thinks Harris deserves 1 more shot at NCB based on what they have watched from film. I doubt it though.

That's his agent's job. More embarrassing is that Rick Smith thought he was even worth 3 years / $5.25 million (McCain was literally THE WORST CB to receive starter snaps every season except 2011 when he was rightly cast as a dime (with Quin moving over from safety to covering the slot). Of course that move was predicated by Rick's abysmal draft record in the secondary that has included:
Brandon Harris - 2nd round
Rashad Carmichael - 4th
Shiloh Keo - 5th
Kareem Jackson - 1st
Sherrick McManus - 5th
Antuan Molden - 3rd
Dom Barber - 6th
Fred Bennett - 4th
Brandon Harrison - 5th

Glover Quin was the only pick Rick has made in the secondary that produced reasonable value and even then, only when demoted to safety which of course he scuttled in letting him walk in favor of a gimpy Ed Reed (a move I liked on paper, but it's not my job to properly assess debilitating injuries on 35 year old hall of famers cut loose from their team immediately after winning a 2nd Super Bowl).

I absolutely buy the belief that many of Rick's moves were unduly influenced by Kubiak who's inherent offensive bias showed thru with several ill advised resignings (Daniels, Schaub, Foster, Kris Brown vs. Mario, Barwin, Ryans) and draft day reaches (Posey, Martin, Bonner, Tate, Anthony Hill, Slaton), but I highly doubt anyone but Rick Smith was involved with the secondary picks considering that's what he played and coached.

I suspect rightfully playing bad cop and standing up to Dunta's demands and grabbing Jonathan Joseph and Manning for less money while making Kubiak do without Winston, Brisiel, Dreessen earned Rick some credibility in stepping out of Kubs shadow, but it is still hard to believe that the awful trade up for Brandon Harris (sacrificing a 3rd and 5th) has never stuck to him considering the nickel spot practically single handedly cost us our best Super Bowl shot in 2012. It's never quite fair to cherry pick, but just a short list of players we could have had if not for Rick's infatuation with overrated former U/Miami defensive players: Randall Cobb - WR, Justin Houston - DE, Stephen Ridley - RB (who the Pat's took with our pick in the 3rd), Ryan Mallett - QB (who we may sacrifice a 2nd rounder and a pile of cash to get), KJ Wright - CB, Jordan Cameron - TE, Cecil Shorts - WR, Julius Thomas - TE, Richard Sherman - CB. It's one thing to sacrifice a 5th rounder to move up 10 spots into the 2nd for a limited skillset player like Harris, it's another thing when you miss Richard Sherman two more times in grabbing Keo and TJ Yates in the 5th round ahead of Sherman. Sure, plenty missed on him (153 picks to be exact), but not many managed to trade up and down the draft board and still leave glaring holes at CB, S, WR, and QB despite all the talent in the middle of that draft.

Here's hoping that Rick Smith has a "Bizarro Casserly" type draft in going against everything he usually does on his way out the door and accidentally falls into an amazing draft like Charlie did in 06!
