I know it's not a glamorous position, but he's a familar name and has worked with McCarthy before (each were coordinators for the Saints in early 2000s).

Seems like a bit of a 'powerhouse' asst. special team's coach.

to be fair, they released the guy who held that position. So it's not like they created a position for him. Plus he was out of coaching for 2 years after his team fell flat on their faces starting out 6-0 and finishing 6-6

Bit of a strange position for sure but best wishes to Zook in this new job.

The Zooker must really be hurting for a paycheck for him to take a job as an Assistant Special Teams coach.. that's pretty far down the totem poll from where he's been in his career. I guess it could simply be him trying to just get his foot back in the door as an NFL coach.. but I feel that if he had just tested the waters for a bit he could have found himself a better gig.. I mean at least a main Special Teams coach as opposed to the Assistant.. who knows though. I wish him luck.

I think it was a title mistake. He's actually the assistant TO the ST coach Wink

I know Zook has been a bit of a laughingstock, especially in his tenure at Florida and stops at Illinois.

I've once had the pleasure of meeting Coach Zook. I was traveling to Illinois as a visit when I was trying to figure out what journalism schools to apply for. When there, I paid a visit to the athletic office with my dad and we asked if -- as Gainesville residents and Gator fans -- Coach Zook would have a moment to say hi.

He sure as hell didn't have to. I wasn't an athlete or anything, but sure enough, Zook took 30 minutes of his time just to chat with me. He showed us around the facilities and offered to let me sit on an ESPN interview with Simeon Rice.

He really is as nice as everyone says he is. I would go so far as to say as -- just in my 30-minute interaction with him -- he is the nicest man I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Perhaps it's his flaw as a coach -- he's too nice -- but really, ever since, I've always rooted for The Zooker.

Good for him to get back into the game he so clearly loves. I'll be pulling for him.

Honestly after the last 3 years I can say that we may have been a bit harsh on the Zooker-- was he great-- not by a long shot but let's be real replacing a championship level coach is hard and he never gave anything less than 100%.
