You know there's also this thing called "defense", right?

Didn't he mention the defense here? Just trying to understand your point.

Team gets #1 pick the previous year and goes to the playoffs the following year. Coach doesnt win Coach of the year. Whats wrong with this picture?

Because he rode the coattails of the best 2-14 team of all time.

Tom Brady might as well have been playing with both arms tied behind his back for literally half the year.

No one thought the Panthers were a loaded roster until they went 12-4. The improvement of that team (the defense in particular) was exemplary. Forgive me for saying so, but it is indeed more impressive than the Patriots getting yet another 12-win year with Tom Brady in a weak conference...

The only other coaches that I would consider giving it to over Rivera would be Reid and Carroll.

Tony Sparano did the same thing in 2008 and didn't win the award. Technically his turnaround was one game better since the 2007 Dolphins were 1-15 rather than 2-14.

If any of you knew much about the Panthers you would know that Rivera was very deserving of this award. He was on the cusp of being fired, started the season 1-3. His 4th down judgement calls directly resulted in a winning season, masking their flaws on offense.

The Panthers could have been a 10 win team last year if Rivera had the same mentality. He improved.

First your avatar is too big according to forum rules.... 80x80 is max (yours is 115x115 please fix it).

Second of all I don't think one person would be too upset if Reid won the award, he is deserving. But if you look at the team that drafted #1 and look at the pro-bowlers they had last season it's obvious they weren't as bad as their record would indicate.

Overcoming self-imposed ineptitude doesn't mean you deserve this award. Rivera had a talented front 7, a bonified playmaker in Newton and a borderline HOF recover in Smith, and he just now put it all together after 3 years (only to lay an egg in the playoffs after a bye). Face it - the Panthers improved this season because Rivera changed from being a liability to simply being a competent coach.
