Patrick Peterson is doing Patrick Peterson things. He is getting away with a little bit of holding and physical play, but they are calls that tend to go the way of the bigger names at the position. It was one area he struggled last season, dealing with more physical players, but his game this week vs Boldin showed he has the ability to foot it with even the most physical of receivers. His two allowed catches were on back to back plays to end the third and start the fourth. Both were of less than 10 yards and both were to Anquan Boldin.

The Yeremiah Bell numbers look ugly, and while he was responsible for the two biggest plays of the game, one of them was not really through any fault of his own, he had good coverage just misread the flight of the ball and only got a fingertip on it, not enough to knock it away from Davis. The 65 yard TD on the other hand is unacceptable from a veteran safety. Bell had deep man and he let Davis get behind him. He did make a couple of nice plays in coverage though it is still the weakest area of his game.

Dansby and Washington are both pretty darn good coverage linebackers. They do get picked on a bit, but more than one of the catches allowed by these guys are short throws into areas just short of their zones. Either of these guys are very good options to cover tight ends in the short areas within 10-12 yards of the LOS both have the COD skills and ability in coverage the cover TE's and Dansby was more than once successful vs Davis in this regard on Sunday.

The teams biggest issue is when Tight Ends go vertical and this is indicative of the struggles the team has at the safety position right now. It is also an area of the Todd Bowles scheme that has proven to be a weakness. He needs someone on that back end to be able to matchup well with Tight Ends and right now this team does not have the personnel.

Jerraud Powers continues his so-so season. He is not physical in coverage at all. Loves giving cushion and is far more accustomed to playing zone coverage than he is man coverage. He is allowing most of the balls thrown at him this season to be completed, the three year deal he signed before the season was not a huge one, but he has not played up to that contract at all. Cason has rarely seen the field either, possibly due to his inability to play slot corner. It is a position the team needs to upgrade.

Tyrann Mathieu continues to do well as a rookie. I think he role now should be cemented in the nickel corner role. It allows him to play with the most comfort and also provides the team with the biggest benefits allowing him to do literally anything, defend the run, play man or zone coverage, blitz off the edge, wash the dishes, clean the sink, make your dinner, do the ironing and make your bed. It does mean that the safety position is still one that needs to be looked at going forward, but it is good to have a player with the skillset of Mathieu on the team.

He gave up 2 td's to Calvin. And I think he may have been in coverage on Jimmy Graham when he scored one of his 2 td's.
