1) protect the ball
2) take a knee when the situation calls for it. no need to be a hero, and nothing wrong with starting at the 20 when tom brady is the qb.
I think all NFL HC's feel the same, I just suppose No. 2 applies more to the Pats than most teams. I'm sure the Jets and Bills are relying on big time returns if they are to stand any chance of winning. _________________

Woodhead drove me nuts on kickoff returns (as much as I loved him as a third down back). He would take it out from the EZ, get hit by the first guy, and pats would start at their own 16. And do not get me started about the time he fumbled in AFCCH vs balt a few years back.
Not to mention the risk of a hold or a block in the back. 90% of kickoff returners would be better served taking a knee as long as it is a few yards deep in the end zone.
