IF he's signed to the PS Squad I don't see why people would still complain. He was never gonna see the field this year anyway. Now he can just focus on grasping the game.

I'm not too informed so I was hoping someone might be able to give me a brief run-down. When an NFL player is released by his team, does he always have to clear waivers first before becoming a free agent? Or do only certain players go through waivers while others become free agents right away upon release? What determines it?

Also, I know little about the practice squad. I know it can only have a maximum of eight players but how does it work? If a player is released, such as Thad Lewis in Buffalo, how does he end up on our practice squad? Would he be released, clear waivers, and sign a new contract to the practice squad? Also, is there an age requirement for it?

Thanks for any answers.

By the way, it's a pretty bad look for the Raiders... 31 teams passed on placing a claim on Tyler Wilson's rookie contract of a 4th round pick [cheap], showed what they all think of him and their pick.

vested veterans (players who've played 3 or 4 full seasons) are not subject to waivers, everyone with less time is)

You see in the reports that with vested veterans says 'contract terminated'

I don't think it shows anything about the pick. Teams were probably turned off by the fact that he was cut by the Raiders.

Yep. If you were a team, how much would you want to take a chance on a guy like Wilson after you've now seen him fail to beat out a UDFA like Matt McGloin on one of the least talented teams there is?

I honestly don't think they care. Sure, I wish they would have taken Barrett Jones over Wilson, but what can ya do? They found a guy in McGloin and there's still a bunch of holes to fill next year anyway.

They had to gut to the majority of the team last year and a lot of the new aquistions were hurt in camp and just coming along.

Eh... I don't think it's as big as a statement as you think. I don't think teams are thinking he was a "bad pick", but rather, when you're down to 53 players in a league you have 2 maybe 3 QBs... why would you cut a player for a QB who wasn't good enough for the Raiders & doesn't know your system?

He'll be stashed on a practice squad, I'm sure.

Means nothing. Most of the rosters are set. Most teams don't want to add a third QB that needs a lot of development time. Raiders have three development QBs on their roster and a bust of a free agent, they can't keep all four QBs on their roster. I thought McGloin was a bit underrated. And him and Wilson are probably similar in terms of development, maybe McGloin a little ahead.

But look at what Wilson had to deal with. Pitrino being an idiot. Losing his three best wide receivers. It was a mess in Arkansas. He just needs to sit and learn.
