in semi-related news....
Browns running back Trent Richardson has said he plans to play in all four preseason games this year. He’s about to be zero for one. According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the signs are pointing to Richardson resting a shin injury that caused him to recently miss some practice time. He returned Monday on a limited basis.

Yes, Blackmon seems to have major maturity issues. He isn't even the best receiver on his team at this point (Cecil Shorts). _________________

As a rookie, Kalil registered six penalties while playing all 1,097 snaps last season as the Minnesota Vikings starting left tackle. So it was a little odd to see his number called for multiple personal fouls in the Vikings 34-14 preseason loss at the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
Kalil: "That's uncharacteristic of me, I'm usually smarter about those things. I think, maybe, I was a little over exaggerated in that game because I was a little out of it in the Buffalo game."
"[At San Fran] The first one, a couple of refs came up to me and said they wouldn't have called it, it was a little iffy. The second one, whoever retaliates is going to get that. That's my fault. Still no excuse, got to be smarter about it."

Hopefully Kalil gets in line for Detroit. He has been getting beat too much this preseason. Especially to his inside. Maybe something isnt right, or he isnt used to his new playing weight. (he has one doesn't he?) _________________

Apparently, from those looking at tape, it's an effort thing and has nothing to do with technique.
Hopefully he's just saving himself for the regular season. _________________

^This. I think Kalil will turn it up a notch or two in the regular season. _________________

Most of the o- and d-linemen are like that to be honest. Robison was the only one that stuck out to me this preseason and it was only for a play or two at San Fran |

Let's hope so. Even then, I don't like seeing him not try his best at all times, even if its only the preseason. We all know the caliber of player this guy can be, and hopefully his potentially laziness doesn't transfer over to the regular season. _________________

Considering how hard Kalil works to stay fit and in shape, I dont think laziness is the right word here. Perhaps he was lackadaisical since it was just a preseason game. _________________

Kalil: “I started off a little slow and got progressively better at the end. That’s what preseason is about. Things I probably wouldn’t try during the regular season I’ll try in a preseason game, different techniques. If those things don’t work, you kind of erase those and work on the things that do work for the regular season. Preseason is just a time or learning and getting back into the game, going against a different jersey for the first time after going through OTAs and going through camps. I guess it kind of portrays how you are going to play, but I wouldn’t like it because I only did OK in the preseason. I’m not too worried about it. I learned from the mistakes that I made and I’m ready to get after it this preseason.”
“It’s my fault for not taking that [Buffalo] game that seriously. I think I can honestly say that. I wasn’t in tune like a regular-season game. I was a little lackadaisical that first snap and gave up a sack. It’s like alright, now let’s get into it. I think when I played San Francisco I wanted to pick the tempo up a little bit – maybe a little too aggressive with those personal fouls. You learn from those things and I’ve got my mind ready for this season and ready to go and start up where I left off last season.”
“I just get out there, I just get in defense mode and don’t let anyone mess with my teammates. Sometimes it’s maybe a little too aggressive and you get a personal foul. The thing you can do about that is be smarter about those plays, but as far as changing my personality and how I approach that, it’s always going to be the same – I’m going to be aggressive. But you can be aggressive and be smart at the same time. I made some dumb decisions in the preseason, but I learned from those and I’m ready to go this season"

There are a lot of good posters on this forum, but it takes something special to not only read Matt Kalil's mind but explain what he was thinking using exactly the same 10-dollar word.
Kudos, vikingsrule.

I guess I'll be one of the few who's taken aback by this team's approach in preseason. If this is the mindset, why bother playing anyone of note to begin with? So the only thing they accomplished this preseason was getting a starter at a position with zero depth injured late in a game that meant nothing...
The most talented player on either line pretty much admitted he wasn't giving any kind of effort. And it definitely showed on the field.
From everything the Vikings hinted at, the offense purposely decided to not show anything at all in any preseason game. And for such a poor and still developing passing game with many new moving parts, I don't see the sense in not having any live action to work out the kinks.
Surprise element or not, I don't see how any of this helps a team. _________________
