Q: The Panthers came pretty close to sweeping the Falcons last season. How tough is it playing your hometown team?

Newton: Its always a heavily critiqued game. Ive always been a Falcons fan, and Im still a Falcons fan except for those two times a year.

A division rival no less.

Cam Newton says he's only not a fan for two days a year.

So? His fandom for his hometown team isn't going to interfere with his ability to play for the Panthers, so I honestly couldn't care less.

Billt, why the heck would you put this in the news forum? It's not News.

What are you talking about? I didn't.

I posted it on NFL general, not news, for discussion. It's just like the Kaepernick hat thread that was posted there.

Yeah, must have saw it wrong, my bad.
Still, it's not a big deal.

Discussion could have stayed in the General thread, honestly. This just doesn't matter.

I am a Wisconsin Badger fan. If I were to have tried to go to UW-Madison and play for them and it didn't work out and went to Ohio State instead (that just sounds wrong to say, by the way), I wouldn't play Wisconsin any easier, I'd actually try to beat them even more, honestly.

You can be a fan, just don't bet against your team. Until somebody proves that he's throwing games, nobody should really care about this. Rolling Eyes

its not that big of a deal....many NFL players still have a soft spot in their heart for the team they grew up rooting for...especially Cam growing up in ATL and idolizing Michel Vick....but Cam unlike other more professional NFL players doesn't know when to shut his big mouth.

Maybe every player just needs to come out and say who their favorite team was prior to being in the NFL.

But about Cam shutting his mouth. I respectfully disagree, I wish all players answered questions honestly. If there is an issue with a player, the media generally finds out AFTER the team and players already know. I'm sure the Panther players already know Cam was/is a Falcon fan and it hasn't been an issue before.

Look, we're all NFL fans here...FANS. Until there are teammates or coaches that say it's a problem that he is being honest, anything anyone else says is a waste of energy. Aldon Smith was on ESPN today saying something similar about Colin Kaepernick, as long as he's motivated and doing his job and helping the team win and being a leader, doesn't matter.

My take is fans just need to stay out of it and get over it. If anyone wants to switch teams or not like a player because of who he's a fan of, they've got some growing up to do. Wink Cam's just being Cam, people need to deal with that. Everyone is different and we don't have a right to tell him to change just because we're fans. Wink

This is just another case of the media scrutinizing every move Cam makes. This couldn't be less of a concern. Two of Cam's best games last year were against the Falcons.
