The #Patriots are releasing WR Donald Jones, I'm told. They want to get their young guys reps. He'll go on waivers.

What's interesting about Donald Jones is that he was running with #Patriots main group of WRs during the offseason. Now, available to all.

After Thompkins showed up in camp, this is less surprising. I hope they go with the young guys overall.

Perez Ashford is from Northern Illinois, 5-10, 188 pounds and runs 4.54.

Quentin Sims is from Tennessee-Martin, 6-3, 208 pounds and runs 4.62.

The Pats now have 88 man on the roster.

I like Sims. Ashford seems meh.

A little disappointing since he singed a 3 year deal but there was no guaranteed money besides of $200,000 workout bonus. I figured Donald Jones would've stuck through preseason but I guess he just wasn't gelling with Brady or the offense too well. The timing is good though because he'll at least get a chance to sign on with another team hopefully and compete for a roster spot still.

It'd be great to see them back a young corps who can grow together as a unit. They must like what they see in Thompkins to let Jones go.

I don't know that I'd read that much into it. Jones was a previously bad/below-average player with mildly intriguing upside. I'm guessing they took a look at him in camp, thought he was struggling with the playbook/chemistry (or has some unknown-to-us injury) and decided to cut bait.

Honestly, if you cut a guy before camp it speaks more to what you think of that guy and his (in)ability to fit in than what you think of anyone else. Even if they like what Thompkins/Harrison/et al showed, it's not enough of a reason to cut a guy you think might make the final 53. With the attrition rate in the NFL, even if Jones was a bubble guy or probable cut, he'd still be around.

I was more surprised that people thought Jones was a good bet to make the roster than him being cut at this point.

It is SO hard to gauge who is gonna survive this WR corps. I think the one underlying dark horse everyone's forgetting about to why Jones was already cut was, Lavelle Hawkins.

I approve this. He shouldn't have a single pass thrown his way that could have went to Boyce and Dobson.

Most definitely. Throw em right into the fire. I am so ready to see Dobson. Hope he helps stretch the field and wows us all with those marshmallow soft hands. With my birthday coming I want a jersey and Dobson's #17 is right at the top

Exactly this. There can't have been anyone that actually thought Jones was going to have a significant role.

Not sure, Jones might of been cut because of a couple of tweets he had regarding the Zimmerman trial:

https://twitter.com/Dajones19/statuses/356235068265598976

He was a fringe player anyway for the Patriots, so there is a chance they didn't like that and chose to cut him earlier rather than sooner.
