Depth chart preview: Strong safety

http://www.csnwashington.com/football-washington-redskins/talk/depth-chart-preview-strong-safety

Quote:
Expected to make the cut: Meriweather, Doughty, Thomas, Rambo

1. If Meriweather is healthy he will start he season

2. Doughty is expected to have a great shot at starting opposite Meriweather because he ended the season as a starter last year

3. Doughty and Gomes bring the most experience on the Redskins as safeties and they bring versatility, so they will definitely be strong candidates to win a starting job

4. Rambo and Thomas are wildcards. They are both experienced in a system similar to the redskins defensive system from their college days. Both Haslet and Morris said both rookies are two of the most ready they've ever coached.

Will that translate to either of them starting though? This question will be answered next month as they try to take what they've learned so far this offseason into trading camp and preseason games.

My guess is that Rambo would start first because he's the only true FS on tge team and we need the best coverage safeties that we have on the field.

P.S. Interesting stat from the article. Doughty was 10th in the league on kickoff and punt coverage tackles last season with 16. Gomes had 9 of his own, and that could factor into each making the team, and us possibly doing the unconventional and keeping 5 safeties this year.

I think Meriweather and Doughty are locks. Hopefully Meriweather will be back to full health, and Doughty is just to important on Special teams.

The two draft picks will make the team. I think Rambo has the best shot to start FS. As you mentioned he is the only true FS on the team. Lets face it....Rambo would have been a much higher draft pick if it wasnt for the two drug issues in college. IMO Thomas is the future at SS. If Meriweather is healthy, there is no way Thomas beats him out for the starting job.

I hate to say it because I really like the kid, but I think Gomes is doen in Washington. He had a chance to step up last year, and just couldnt get the job done. Bernstine is to fragile. He may get a shot in camp, but I dont see him in our future plans. Pugh has a chance at the 5th Safety but I highly doubt it.

I think there is a chance that we only carry 4 Safety and 6 Corners. If Minnifield can stay healthy, I think he has a shot to be the 6th corner. Hall could slide over to FS in a pinch, and Crawford could fill in at the slot corner position. I realize Minnifield staying healthy is a long shot, but he could really make a difference if he could get on the field.

Lastly, Tenard Jackson.....I hate this move, but the team seems to be open to him comming back....I guess time will tell.

I went Merriweather, Rambo, Thomas, Doughty... I think Pugh and Gomes are cut and Doughty is kept...

We may even see packages with 3 Safeties and Haslett getting really creative (but I don't see RD on the field for this one- he should purely be a runstopper/ST- that's it)

Giants Defense blew up with 3 Safeties...

I didn't realize that, awesome.

It'd be cool if we played that cobra package again, have Meriweather and Doughty play their normal safety positions, then Rambo as a single high safety so we don't get beat deep with big plays.

They will all move around quite a bit if they can get up to speed-- it's why I think we may keep 5 and draft another next year and another CB....

Quote:
The Giants lined up with three safeties on roughly 75 percent of their defensive plays, using three linebackers the rest of the time.
Only in certain games yes, but effective when they did...

“It gives our defense a different kind of versatility that a lot of teams haven’t seen or really can’t prepare for,” Rolle said. “That’s why our roles change, so you can never really know what we’re doing at any given time.”

Since the Cobra package was a Greg Blache term, maybe it needs a new Moniker under Haslett, as I am sure he will be far more creative. But here's another article you may find interesting on some of the reasons for the players we drafted.

http://sonofwashington.com/2013/06/27/bigger-faster-a-more-versatile-defense/

Quote:
The idea is to confuse the offense into making a mistake and more blitzing options is likely to cause more mistakes.
Hence Cofield (instead of a larger NT, and a Dline that gets upfield fast), running with more Safeties on the field, drafting a pure pass-rush LB
Quote:

The Redskins could decide to blitz the nickel corner/safety and drop a linebacker into coverage or they could blitz one of the deeper safeties and rotate coverage.

They are attempting to get bigger, faster players on the field and win matchups.

It is a philosophy that is going to be used on Offense and Defense. Mark my words- from the TE thread- these athletic TE's are going to be the future and will be a much more prominent feature of our Offense as interchangeable Safeties (and bigger corners) will become a necessary staple of our Defense.

No we may not carry as many TE's as WR's Or S as CB's, but the numbers are going to become more equal as they find ways to get these guys on the field to exploit mismatches
