Spikes skipped a voluntary mini camp. I wouldn't classify that as extremely selfish but it is a poor team-first mentality IMO. I think I chose to use those words because of the way he expresses himself through twitter. He always talks about how his way is the right way for him and nobody does it quite like he does, because he views himself as unorthodox in his approach. That's his interpretation, mine as a fan is that he's a little more selfish in his approach than others. I think that's one way you could view his attitude. Also, it was fairly selfish of him to get suspended for taking PED's and to get caught a while ago on a webcam basically filming pornography. Because of those things, and the fact that he is in a contract year suggests he'll be looking out for himself more than ever at this point in his career. For those reasons, I think Belichick will look to ship him off and get value in return but whether he does or not won't prevent him from keeping the team first.

If Belichick had no problem giving Logan Mankins a massive contract after Mankins no-showed mandatory camp (and regular season games), why would he have a problem (enough to dump a critical part of the defense) with Spikes skipping a few workouts?

Besides, Spikes was at mini-camp last month so it's not like he skipped all of the off-season activity.

The webcam thing was in college and totally irrelevant to any claim of him being "selfish". The PED thing, well Belichick has no problem employing drug users, wife beaters, cop punchers and suspected gang members so I doubt that getting a 4 game ban for "Adderall" would cause Spikes to fall too far out of favor.

On-field, Spikes is a vocal leader and seems to be a great teammate. And I've never heard any questions about his character (in terms of selfishness) off-field or about any possible locker room issues.

I guess we can't rule out a trade, as it's unlikely Spikes comes back next year and it's possible Hightower makes him expendable. However, the Pats really don't have any LB depth beyond the top 4 guys. I don't know that trading Spikes for anything other than an exceptional return would make sense and cutting him makes absolutely no sense IMO. If he were a true attitude problem, he'd be gone by now. Belichick doesn't keep those guys around too long (e.g. Steve Martin, Adalius Thomas, reportedly Kyle Love).

This team has a long history under BB of guys who become disgruntled with their contracts and hold-out/skip camp/make stupid comments in the press. None of them have ever been released for that kind of stuff. I think the Spikes situation will play out much like the others - he will suck it up, play out the year and head elsewhere next year.

Spikes broke out last year after going through the same off-season program he is following this year. No one said anything last year because he didn't show up in games like he did last season. I am 100% ok with him continuing the way he is going.

It's too early to really start predicting these things, the top 35 spots are pretty much locked down barring injuries and the rest will come down to how these guys look in camp and how injuries force them to adjust their roster composition. Every year we struggle with projecting "tough cuts" to get down to 53 and inevitably the team cuts way down to 50 and adds some no-name scrub from another roster.

In general though, I think it will be almost impossible for Thompkins or Harrison to make the 53 man roster unless Boyce remains injured. 3 rookie WR's is crazy if the team is only carrying 5 (assuming Amendola and one of Jones/Jenkins makes it).

I also think people are overstating the chances of Leon Washington.

For me, the interesting competitions that seem to be flying a bit under the radar right now are along the DL - the spots for Francis/Bequette/Cunningham/Benard and the backup interior spots (I still think they will try to add an external option there). Much depends on Armstead's development and whether or not they like him at the 3-technique. They seem to be lacking an obvious backup NT (Grissom by default?) and I'm not sold on Forston as a backup UT.

The other spot that I think will be interesting is the Tarpinian/Edds/Beauharnais/Koutouvides/Rivera/Fletcher group. They probably will end up keeping 2 of those guys (again, barring injury to the primary guys). The team has lacked true backup LB depth for awhile, and they might continue to go thin there and hope they can kick a DE out to OLB (Ninkovich primarily) and rotate Mayo/Hightower inside if needed. I would like to see someone with coverage ability make the team with Beauharnais and Edds being the guys I think are best suited for that role.
