So ESPN sort of prompted this idea with their 2016 power rankings... Where do you guys see our team in the future? Like 3 years from now, 5 years, 7 years, 9 years... You get the idea. But how about in relativity to our division? Our conference? The league?
Ideally, i'd like realistic, well-thought-out answers, but i'm aware homerism can be a powerful influence. Laughing

I honestly don't want to think of what we'll become Post-Brees

The thought of him retiring makes me weep

In 2016 the NFL will be a touch football league. None of the current Saints RBs will be around. The offensive line will be filled with a bunch of guys who are 200 lbs and TE elgible. Jimmy Graham will still be a beast. Brees will be approaching the end of his contract and Sean Payton will consider not renewing with the team.

2015
Still Superbowl contender.

Offensively we'll look pretty much the same except RB. All 4 are FAs then. Sproles and Thomas aren't getting younger, Ingram's a bust unless he steps it up this season, in which case he won't come back, and I've never been to excited about Cadet. I expect 1 to resign, maybe 2. Look for new faces next couple years.

Defensively or line will be our strong point. Jordan, Jenkins, Hicks line of the future. LBs and secondary just getting younger, Smith, Vilma, Chamberlain, Harper, Greer, and Jenkins all gone. Expect early picks going to those spots next couple years.

2018
Defensive team, likely playoff team, but not Super Bowl contender.
When Brees leaves Payton and Loomis will too.
I expect Ryan gone as well because players won't fit scheme.

Offense similar to the Colts. Decent line, varying age of WR (Graham is Wayne, Toon is Collie etc.), and new QB and RB. Starters still on team Armstead, DeLa Puente, Jones, Graham, Toon, Moore.

Defense similar to Texans. Again line is strength, good overall LBs and secondary one star in each. Starters still on team Jordan, Jenkins, Hicks, Tez, Johnson, Thomas, Vaccaro, White.

2021
Who knows?
Players maybe still on roster: Thomas, White, Jenkins, Vaccaro, Johnson, Wilson
Players likely still on roster: Toon, Jordan, Hicks

Sean Payton will retire a Saint. Head Coaches of his caliber RARELY leave.

Meh. I think they'll give him several chances to find a new franchise QB. If he does, he sticks around until he leaves the NFL. If not, I can see him trying his luck elsewhere.

I'm of the belief that after Brees goes, we'll probably have a bad season (unless Payton drafts someone in the next couple of years to sit behind Brees and he ends up being really good), and he'll have a chance or 2 to find a new franchise QB, if he does, I can see him being here until he leaves/retires, if not, I think he'll be gone.

There's no way in hell Ryan Griffin is a franchise quarterback.

Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, Warren Moon, Tony Romo. You think these guys were all seen as franchise guys in their rookie seasons?

You never know.

Meh, he was taken at the top of the 2nd, just like Brees. It means there was at least something there that the Falcons liked. He was then traded for a 1st.

Roster Wise- Projecting a Contender in 2016 necessitates drafting more effectively in the coming years.

By 2016, Sean Payton will have been fired. Hiring Rob Ryan will be largely to blame, but the inability to fix the Defense will have forced a Rebuild. The question will be does Brees want to stick around for 3-4 years of rebuilding? In an ideal world, the roster would've been supplemented via successful drafts (Steelers) over the past few years. The 'Core' from the SB Team has aged, and roster turnover was inevitable. The Combination of Bounty Gate Penalties & dismal selections leaves the cupboard pretty empty.

Payton will simply want out rather than rebuilding. And he'll emphasize to Mr. Benson that it's not his strength (Salary Cap & Personnel Management). They'll part on amicable terms. Benson will thank him for a tremendous era in Saints Football, and Sean whose current 49 Years Old (Wow Young) will have his choice of marquee jobs- New York Teams, Dallas, Houston, ect. You'll ask, why did he resign then? Because he had $ 40 Million reasons.

Rebuilding a roster often requires breaking it down to the studs. To avoid this fate, you've got to draft well. Failure in drafts isn't evident just on the surface, the ENTIRE offseason speaks to this reality. Had to sign Keenan Lewis, overpay him in the process, b/c the team can't find a Corner. Last yera overpaid 2 Linebackers because it made sense- We got Fujita & Shanle the year of the SB. Brodrick Bunkley- Missed on Sedrick Ellis. Darren Sproles- Opps w/ Reggie Bush.

The goal besides maybe the Sproles acquisition isn't about adding talent or scheming to win more games, it's about covering up the major errors in the draft.

Sean will be Gone. If the Saints are Smart, they'd admit this 'Core' ain't winning another Super Bowl. Get value back for the useful parts, and being to rebuild.
