Ed Bouchette‏@EdBouchette17m
Steelers sign Jarvis Jones for $8.5 M with $4.7 M signing bonus over 4 years, 5th year club option

Are you confused at the length of the deal?

Under the new CBA, most rookie deals are only 4 years at most. Even Andrew Luck last year only signed a 4 year deal.

I like the 5th year option. Didn't know you could even do that.

And while most teams have given out 4 years, the Steelers had been giving out only 3 year deals. Why? No clue. It's a nice change that all the picks have gotten 4 so far.

It's the standard contract for all first round picks.

I was under the impression that only the higher draft picks in the 1st round could sign the 5 year deals. But I see that Decastro signed the same deal.

Hopefully he is more like Lloyd and less like Alonzo Jackson

i don't even remember Alonzo Jackson. Who's that?

http://www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/2011/4/26/2133715/top-ten-draft-busts-kevin-colbert-pittsburgh-steelers

Never mind, I looked it up. I think Jones will be better. Jackson was taken a round later than Jones was.

Quote:
Anyway, Jackson was a big bust, but he had some stiff competition at linebacker. In 2003, his rookie year, here's who was ahead of him on the depth chart. (Age).

Inside Linebackers: James Farrior (27); Kendell Bell (25)

Outside Linebackers: Jason Gildon (31); Joey Porter (26)

That's three guys in their absolute prime, but the veteran Gildon who was playing his final year in the 'Burgh. Presumably Jackson was drafted to take over the starting duties from Gildon in 2004, or at the very latest, 2005.

Fast forward to 2004, and here's the depth chart at LB.

Linebackers: James Farrior (2Cool; Larry Foote (24)

Outside Linebackers: Joey Porter (27); Clark Haggans (27)
I'm not saying Jackson would have ever amounted to anything if these guys weren't infront of him but its hard to crack a starting line up with that talent infront of you. Also, As I said he was a late 2nd, almost a 3rd round pick. A lot of 2nd round picks don't work out, in fact it seems like most don't work out.
