Not sure why this is receiving so much hate on social media. Backus was solid his entire career here. Was he superstar? No. Given amount if pass attempts this team had in his tenure is insane. He has a lot of wisdom he can show younger guys.

The hate he receives is really a shame considering there is Only a good dozen better over last decade

I absolutely love this move. Backus was a steady workman on the oline for a long time. He managed to be a starter in the NFL on a team that each year could have replaced him but chose not to.

He brings leadership, dedication, instructional ability on technique, off season conditioning etc.

Not only that but he kept his nose clean his entire career. He has a great deal of wisdom to share.

Yes and double yes on the bolded.

Great move on the Lions part. Backus was a part of this team for a long long time. Career Lion and this is the right move.

Not a franchise LT but did a solid job overall his entire career. Love or hate this guy for his play he will be a great coach.

Cool.

Least that the team can do for him after all of those years that he put in with us.

He probably has something to offer after such a long career, too.

Once again, even though retired he puts the team first. It's an intern position and he isn't getting paid.

I didn't realize that. Love to see that the Lions still mean that much to him.

People are griping because hes been one of the only constants on a horrible team over the last decade. Combine that with him playing a position that gets most of their attention for negativity and you're gonna have a lot of bafoons commenting. Backus 2as no where near elite and I wouldnt even say he was great through his carreer but as a whole I would say he did very well. You dont last that long on the same team through several regime changes if you're bad. It doesnt work that way.

Shared an elevator with just him at the hotel the team was staying at in San Diego years ago. I didn't say anything... I'm still furious at myself for not shaking his hand and saying, "Mr. Backus? I'm a Lions fan. I just want to say thank you." and leaving it there.

He wasn't ever the best tackle around, but he was a lifelong Lion. He could have made more and gone to a better team, but he stuck around out of loyalty. He was an iron man and always left it on the field.

It's a shame that we never gave him anyone decent to work with at guard until he was well past his prime. He took a ton of heat, some justified and some not, but we'll never know how good he could have been if he had been given anyone to work with on the line or at QB before he was almost done.

Anyway, his issues were never with work ethic, technique, effort, attitude, or knowledge of the position. They were mostly with going up against guys with superior speed or strength... or getting blamed for someone else missing an assignment. I can't possibly see how keeping him around in this capacity could be anything but good.
