Antonio Gates' health seems to be a bit of an issue. Still a monster when healthy, but you ended up grabbing some vets last season and drafting Ladarius Green

so how's this all seem like it's going to shake out?

It looks like it's going to be very similar to last year.

Phillips replaces McMichael as the blocking TE, and Green replaces Rosario as Gates' backup. But, the roles seem pretty well-defined. Even with a new coaching staff, I can't see them taking Gates off the field unless he's injured. He still finds his ways behind linebackers and into holes in coverage, and still sees defenses double teaming him frequently.

However, this is a big year for Gates. His salary increases each of the remaining three years he's under contract, including this year. The production he put up last year is not sufficient at what he's being paid. That being said, it was an all-around disappointing season for him. The intermediate/deep passing game was generally anemic (for obvious reasons) and Gates had an uncharacteristic case of the drops last year. There is reason to believe that he can bounce back, if healthy. But, if not, his starting job in 2014 and beyond appears to hinge on him taking a sizeable paycut as well as the development of Green.

Phillips is safe at the moment. He was signed to a 3-year contract and there appears to be no threat to his job on the roster. If he disappoints, they could draft a developmental player to challenge him in 2015. With the Chargers likely to carry 6 WRs this season, there might not be enough room on the roster for a 4th TE... but there could be next year.
