Seems like Cully has had a far fall from grace. He was one of the top CB's metrically according to PFF in the first 13.5 games or so, with 1-2 bad games here and there. Then the 2nd half of the Pats game onwards he couldn't stop anything. Even gave up a long TD to Michael Floyd in the Cards game (granted, it was garbage time).

If he keeps on getting burned a position change wouldn't be out of the question...but i think they're going to give him an opportunity to get out of this funk.

With Brown not practicing, Asomugha was getting 1st team reps over Culliver. Not sure what to make of this, but the CB battle in training camp/preseason will be one to watch.

From what i understand, Culliver has not looked very good so far at OTA's. He was burned a few times during drills, including giving up the only touchdown during 7-7 redzone drills against chad hall I think. I'm starting to wonder about him.

Still feel like he should have been moved to FS. Things could change, but Culliver was never very good at spotting the ball. He can run with most receivers, but he has poor ability to locate the ball as it arrives. His prior experience and skill as a S would have been the way to go, IMHO. Keeping things (mostly) in front of him while utilizing that 4.3 speed and length? Talk about click and close. (drools on self).

Eric Reid at SS and Chris Culliver at FS....

I too was in favor of moving him to safety. I still like the idea, and with whitner a free agent next year (though I think only 28 or something? could be resigned), I agree that would be a good combination. The problem with that though is that Culliver is essentially the only corner we have under contract next year since it has to be a lock that Rogers is cut (though he could take a paycut, obviously, I feel we are better off just moving on from him). Moving him to safety would seriously require us to find 5-6 corners next year. We could resign some of our own guys, I'm sure, but I haven't heard any talk about possible extensions to people like Brown.

Good point, and a big reason why I was hoping we would snag a mid-rd corner in this recent and rich CB class. Still.. I think we could field a solid CB corps next season in a number of ways. Especially since we have lots of draft ammo to either use via draft or trade.

Preseason week 1 update

Bold- inactive

QB: Colin Kaepernick (BJ Daniels, Scott Tolzien/waiver wire QB)
RB/FB: Frank Gore (Kendall Hunter, LaMichael James, Bruce Miller)
TE: Vernon Davis (Vance McDonald, Garett Celek)
WR: Anquan Boldin, Kyle Williams (Marlon Moore, Quinton Patton, Chad Hall, AJ Jenkins)
OL: Joe Staley, Mike Iupati, Daniel Kilgore, Alex Boone, Anthony Davis (Jonathan Goodwin, Adam Snyder, Joe Looney)

DL: Justin Smith, Ian Williams, Ray McDonald (Demarcus Dobbs, Glenn Dorsey, Tank Carradine, Quinton Dial)
ILB: Patrick Willis, NaVarro Bowman (Michael Wilhoite, Nick Moody)
OLB: Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks (Corey Lemonier, Parys Haralson, Dan Skuta)
CB: Tarrell Brown, Carlos Rogers (Tramaine Brock, Nnamdi Asomugha, Perrish Cox)
S: Eric Reid, Donte Whitner (Craig Dahl, CJ Spillman, Trenton Robinson)

K: Phil Dawson
P: Andy Lee
LS: Brian Jennings

PS: RB DJ Harper, WR Ricardo Lockette, OL Carter Bykowski, OL Al Netter, DL Lawrence Okoye, LB Cam Johnson, CB Marcus Cooper, S Michael Thomas

PUP: Crabtree, Manningham
NFI: Lattimore, Marquadt
IR: Culliver, Fleming, Carswell, Debniak (last 3 are just camp fodder)

Notable cuts: Colt McCoy, Anthony Dixon, Kassim Osgood, Austin Collie, Will Tuakufu

-I thought McCoy looked like the worst QB on the team, his upside is limited, and Harbaugh has said that the #2 QB spot is "wide open"- it indicates to me that he's practicing (and now playing) poorly. Tolzien wasn't much better. Daniels gets in on upside and versatility, and we should be scanning the waiver wire for suitable #2 QB's.

^I think this is a solid prediction. There are going to be some solid cuts.

Just a couple quick thoughts from me - we run a lot of 3 TE sets, so it seems very likely that Garrett Celek won't be inactive on gamedays (You'll probably see a 2nd inactive DL). I also wouldn't be surprised if we see either or both of Dial/Carradine starting the year on the PUP list, or even Dial being reserved. If that happens, Tukuafu likely will start the year on the roster, and someone will be cut (possibly Tukuafu) when they come off. I wouldn't even be too surprised to see Dial end up on IR and redshirt the year with Lattimore. The other guy likely to stick if both don't start the year on the 53-man roster is probably Dixon.

^^^^^^

Also, I think it is very likely that even if Manningham isn't ready for week one he will just be a game day inactive so that we can activate him as soon as he is ready to go. I don't think he will be inactive for more than a game or two if he even misses time at all. Don't think there is any chance Collie or Jerrod-Eddie make the team, and the opposite is true for Dixon. He is the only guy on the roster who could fill in at both RB and FB, and is a good ST contributor. He is one of the depth players I would say is a roster lock.

EDIT: Other than the above, I really like the way your roster looks.

I think it's already been announced Mario will start the year on the PUP list, which means he can't be activated (and doesn,t count as a roster spot) for the first six weeks of the year.

There's this Will Tukuafu guy that has been forgotten. Tony Jerod-Eddie will be on the PS. Tukuafu makes the roster, until Tank Carradine returns from injury, that is. Then, either Dobbs or Tukuafu will have to go. Tukuafu is the favorite for being cut.

I must have missed that announcement. I was under the impression Manningham was shooting for a week 1 return (unrealistic), but would probably be a full go by week 3-4.

my final prediction.

QB: Kaepernick (McCoy, Daniels)
HB: Gore (Hunter, James, Dixon, Miller)
TE: Davis (McDonald, Gray)
WR: Boldin, Patton (Williams, Moore, Baldwin)
OL: Staley, Iupati, Goodwin, Boone, Davis (Snyder, Kilgore, Looney)

DL: Smith, Williams, McDonald (Dorsey, Dobbs, Jerrod-Eddie)
ILB: Willis, Bowman (Wilhoite, Moody)
OLB: Smith, Brooks (Lemonier, Skuta)
CB: Rogers, Brown (Asomugha, Brock, Cox, Cooper)
S: Reid, Whitner (Dahl, Spillman, Robinson)

K: Dawson
P: Lee
LS: Jennings

PUP: Crabtree, Manningham
NFI: Lattimore, Marquardt, Carradine, Dial, Wright
IR: Culliver, McBath, Fleming, Carswell, Debniak

PS: RB Jewel Hampton, OL Carter Bykowski, OL Wayne Tribue, DL Lawrence Okoye, LB Cam Johnson, CB Daryl Morris, S Michael Thomas, LS Kevin McDermott

This is actually 52, with an open 53rd spot- Wallace, Osgood, Hall, Collie, Hawkins, Tuakufu all could take the 53rd spot. Or maybe someone on the waiver wire- an OL, WR, or QB in particular. Or any of our P-Squadders except for Okoye (too raw) and McDermott (we don't need 2 longsnappers).

I thought Jerod-Eddie played pretty well this preseason. I could easily see Tukuafu making the 53 over him, but Jerod-Eddie is younger and has a lot more room to grow imo. Looks like I need to do some adjusting, with Collie supposedly on the outs and the Haralson trade.

My best guess:

QB: Kaepernick, McCoy, Daniels
RB: Gore, James, Hunter, Dixon
FB: Miller
WR: Boldin, Patton, Williams, Baldwin, Moore
TE: Davis, McDonald, Celek
T: Staley, Davis, Snyder
G: Iupati, Boone, Looney
C: Goodwin, Kilgore

DE: Smith, McDonald, Dobbs, Jerod-Eddie
DT: Williams, Dorsey
OLB: Smith, Brooks, Lemonier, Skuta, Johnson
ILB: Willis, Bowman, Wilhoite, Moody
CB: Rogers, Brown, Asomugha, Brock, Cox, Cooper
S: Whitner, Reid, Spillman, Dahl, Ventrone

K: Dawson
P: Lee
LS: McDermott

Practice squad:

Hampton
Jacobs
Morris (if he makes it through)
Tolzien
Gray
Stupar
Bykowski
Tribue

These are just coming from our own guys, of course. Always a chance we pick up some guys from the waiver wire instead. Also can't help but feel like I'm missing someone important (other than Jennings, who I would be very sad to see go).
