Could this have something to do with it?

If you're a fan of the Bills, you know this has been rumored to happen since Thanksgiving - if you don't pay any attention to the Bills (13 playoff less seasons will do that to a casual fan) then you're probably wondering what a strange time?

The plan has been all along once Buffalo took Doug Whaley from the Steelers was to groom him under Buddy Nix, and eventually he would become the next GM of the Buffalo Bills. Once this off-season started, Doug Whaley received offers from other teams about interviewing for positions in their front offices - once it was made public Whaley declined those, everybody had a feeling that this was going to happen soon, except when a couple weeks ago, after media/fans pressed about Buddy's future, Bills CEO Russ Brandon said Buddy would be here "a long time" hence the now special assistant title.

Buddy Nix made a lot of great roster moves. One of his first big moves was trading Lee Evans, and everybody thought that was a huge mistake. He turned out to be right. He added waiver guys such as Kraig Urbik, Chad Reinhart, Erik Pears and Scott Chandler, all guys who would go on to make significant impacts with the Bills. He drafted CJ Spiller, even though that was probably the wrong move at the time, it became a nice piece for the Bills. He's had a couple of okay drafts - jury is still out on Dareus after a good rookie season, mediocre sophomore season. He was able to get the biggest free agent in 2012 to sign a long term deal with the Bills.
Now he's drafted the hopeful future franchise quarterback in the Bills, while gutting the aging veterans.

Buddy Nix will always be tied to 2 fella's though: Chan Gailey and Ryan Fitzpatrick, two people that did not work.

All in all, Buddy Nix has added lots of depth to this roster, and a couple of stars, but there are still plenty of question marks on this roster.

It'll be interesting to see how Marrone and co. move forward, if Nix made the right choice. Time will tell.

It's not a stretch to say he's been the best GM Buffalo has had since John Butler (Donahue, Levy, Brandon)

To non bills fans the timing might seem odd but, this has been the plan at OBD for a while now. Nix isn't leaving yet either, he's going to transition back into being a head of the scouting department while Whaley takes over his duties at GM.

I'm excited.

Perfect timing. Wouldn't it be better to step down after the draft as opposed to just before it? Besides, Doug Whaley was heavily involved in the draft. It will be a complete shock if Whaley is not named GM soon.

He's like, "Well let me draft these players so I can watch them play on Sundays without having to suffer the repercussions of drafting them!"

I really hope the Bills can turn things around. I would love to see E.J. Manuel develop into a solid starting quarterback - he sure seems to have the tools and personality.

Which is logical since the conclusion of signing UDFA's marks the end of the scouting season. I really don't see what all the excitement over the timing is, even from non/casual fans. But, whatever...Serious Bills fans already expected Whaley to take the reins from Nix this year.

Everyone knew this was going to happen. It was only a matter of time when it was going to occur. Gonna miss Nix, gotta love a good ole southern boy who loves the game of football. Many speculated that he would step down after the draft... looks like they were right.

A little clarification for those who aren't overly familiar with the inner working of the Bills.

Buddy Nix is not being fired, and is even remaining with the Bills. This is a transition that's been in the works for a while. He's been training up Doug Whaley to take over for him and talking of retirement, so this is no surprise, even if many expected it to happen after the season.

There's about a 99.9% chance Whaley is officially announced as the GM in the very near future, and he's already been doing some of that work to begin with.

I see. Still, strange timing.

Why? This would be a strange timing for a coach but perfect for a GM. Would you rather him step down at the end of the football season when the off-season is just beginning or before the football season when the off-season is going to close?

Scouting calendar told Nix it was time

Quote:
As Nix explained it the scouting season for the 2014 class begins next week, so to step aside now would make for the cleanest break for a transition to a new GM.

A surprise to no Bills fan whatsoever. Great decision. 3 years in the making.

Different direction for Bills. Whaley is only 40. Bills continue to remake front office.
