He'll be there for another 5 years... and nobody really seemed to notice till today.

Quote:
First Coast News reports that Smith has been in a Mississippi jail since late March, and is scheduled to be there until 2018, serving time on charges of cocaine possession and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Smith has had a series of arrests since retiring after the 2005 season, and recently moved back to his hometown of Jackson, Miss.

Sad on multiple levels. I remember as a kid back in the old AFC Central days when the Jaguars and Titans were as much our hated rivals as the Steelers were, this guy was just an absolute terror. Him, Keenan McCardell, Mark Brunell, with Tom Coughlin's neon yellow hair leading them... they were responsible for basically Jacksonville's most significant relevance in their franchise's history.

So it's a shame to hear that his life has gone down the tubes. Substance abuse is a terrible thing.

It's also kind of sad that it took till now for someone to even notice. The fall from grace can be swift, tragic, and even quiet.

Sad. I hope he can turn his life around.

As a fan of the New York Mets, I know what it is like to see legendary members of your franchise struggle with drug addiction problems. Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry both allowed drugs to derail careers that otherwise would have certainly earned them both admission into the Hall of Fame. Fortunately, Strawberry has been sober for nearly a decade and has been working for the Mets organization for the past fews. It has been a tougher road for Gooden, but he also on the road to recovery and has been sober for the past few years.

He is in prison, not in jail. You don't go to jail for six years. Smile

Great player though.

Prison doesn't fit in the title, we'll just have to make due. Laughing

Echoing a comment on the Deadspin article, Titus Young isn't even the best receiver behind bars now.

Coming from someone who's experienced it in one form or another his whole life.

Substance abuse destroys people. And it really is sad that his life is headed down this road. hopefully these years in prison will give him perspective and help him overcome his addiction.

He had one of the best 3 year stretches from a WR between 99-01. Extremely underrated football player, good person.

Just couldn't get past his addiction. It's sad, really.

Poor Jimmy. He's a borderline HOFer but cocaine is a hell of a drug.
