It's just social anxiety disorder. Rare in football players though because usually people with SAD withdrawal from others. I'm sure most of you have given a speech in class and then there is always THAT kid, if it wasn't you. On one hand I felt bad for them, but on the other hand it was always brutal.

That's not 100% true. Teams certainly do give some rookies a number. Some rookies are given a choice between a couple numbers, and for some rookies they can have whatever number they choose that's available.

In the case at hand with Ertz being a high 2nd rounder, I'm almost positive he was given his choice of digits that were available for his position. Hence why he got #86, his college number.

I'm guessing it's done in a system where their individual draft position determines their order of number picking, but I have no evidence to support that, just a hunch.
